The new point-buy?

From the reports from the PHB Viewing we've learned that point-buy assumes you start with the array 10,10,10,10,10,8 and add 25 points to that.

Since this can't be using the normal point-buy table, I set out to find the new one. This is what I found:
Code:
 8 -> 9        1 point
 9 -> 10       1 point
10 -> 11       1 point
11 -> 12       1 point
12 -> 13       2 points
13 -> 14       2 points
14 -> 15       2 points
15 -> 16       2 points
16 -> 17       4 points
17 -> 18       4 points
It works out to 25 points for the standard array (16,14,13,12,11,10) used in the KotS pre-gens and also explains the stats for all the pre-gens from DDXP, except Kathra and Erias (only 24 points for them), but didn't the pre-gen responsible admit that he had forgotten a point on one or two of the characters?

So... comments?

Might work out that way, but I think it was a simple cost for increase, something like
+1 1 pt
+2 2 pt
+6 8 pt
+10 16 pt

These are not the numbers. It covered the full range, but gave the total cost for the stat bump. Thus it cost more to bump the 8 to a 16 than to bump a 10 to 16.

Sorry I didn't take notes on the chart.

Well, you could express the same data in many ways. Maybe they showed the total cost based on if the ability starts on 8 or 10.

Like this:
Code:
         8      10
        ==      ==
 8       0
 9       1
10       2       0
11       3       1
12       4       2
13       6       4
14       8       6
15      10       8
16      12      10
17      16      14
18      20      18

It seems to mesh with what we have seen, so it can be correct. Not a fan of increased cost point buys as the default, but oh well.

Given the way that primary attributes contribute to attack and damage on almost every action, I predict that the standard array will be 18, 14, 11, 10, 10, 8. Maybe 18, 12, 12, 12, 11, 8 on characters that don't have an obvious second attribute.

I thought it had been settled earlier that it was a 32-pt buy (starting from 8's) with a slightly different counting scheme than 3.x?
Code:
9-13     1pt
14-17    2pt
18       4pt

Total Costs
9     1
10    2
11    3
12    4
13    5
14    7
15    9
16    11
17    13
18    17

This looks like a decent 'focused' array...
Code:
18   17
14   7
12   4
10   2
10   2
8    0
