The Nintendo Revolution

So, essentially, we know a whole lotta nothing. Great.

I think it'll be a while before it's worth speculating on poor old Nintendo's next system. The backwards compatibility (with the GCN, anyways) is great, indeed - but that's about it. As for "downloading" all the previous Nintendo system games... yeah, whatever. I'll have to see that in action before I'll believe it'll be any good.

But, otherwise, I'm not particularly interested in Nintendo's current game philosophy anyways. I don't give two poops if a game is "accessible" or not.

I think I'm dropping Nintendo from my console collection with the next generation (especially if they've decided to follow MS and Sony down the the crazy, wrong-headed massively-parallel in-order CPU road); I've got all of one game on my Cube, and Nintendo's big franchises aren't my cup of tea.

I want to know about the controller...they keep saying its going to be different and such, yet it'll need to be similar enough to play GC, N64, SNES, and NES games. One thing I don't want is the whole touch thing that the DS has...but I'm kind of afraid that's going to be it.

We already know that the Rev's controllers will be wireless, so the popular belief around the 'net is that those ports at the top of the Rev are for GC controllers. The ports are the same shape as those on the GC and share the same dot-based numbering (*/**/***/****).

Not popular belief - it's confirmed. The two slots on the right are GC memory card slots.

Well, if Nintendo franchise games don't suit you, no Nintendo system is for you, since there's much else to own one of them for.

Yup, I probably go Xbox 360 and the new Nintendo system since I love their franchise games so much. :D

i was watching some stuff on g4 the other day and one of the nintendo guys said something about since it will play all the old games, imagine what all the old controllers look like and what would be able to play them all.

so i was wondering if naybe this thing would look like some sort of "wheel" with different buttons/sticks/pads depdning on which quarter of the wheel youre holding.

its the image that popped in my mind, i just dont know how feasible it would be. especially since all the old systems just had a dpad and prograssively more buttons.

It's a far cry from nothing, contrary to what you seem to believe. We did indeed learn a lot at E3 about the Revolution, just not all the technical details.

I think it'll be a while before it's worth speculating on poor old Nintendo's next system.

They are old (over a century!) but far from poor. :p

No quote says they would be all of the previous games. Many games required peripherals such as the Light Zapper to be used, so they wouldn't make much sense anyway.

But, otherwise, I'm not particularly up on Nintendo's current game philosophy anyways. I don't give two poops if a game is "accessible" or not.

And you're so eloquent about it. :\

More seriously though, what is this "accessible" you're referring to? No one else here has said that, so your complaint seems to lose something.

And allow me to enlighten you on (at least part of) Nintendo's game philosophy: there's more to games that just raw technological power.

I might spring for a Revolution. I skipped the Gamecube but I did borrow my friend's a play through Wind Waker. Like many, I just love Nintendo's 1st party titles and the Gamecube backwards compatability really pleases me.

So the only real question for me is: get all 3 consoles, or just 2? If so, which two? For my second choice, I'm leaning 80% PS3, 20% XBox360.

Since it seems that PS3 and XBox360 will both be over $300 each at launch, and the Revolution being closer to the $200 range, I can't afford to buy all 3, plus controllers, memory cards, and games for each. Maybe some of you can, and more power to ya, but not I. :p

And that's not even taking into account the portable equasion, since I still want to buy one of the new models. Probably go with PSP since the DS is likely to be emulated fully shortly and we can just play those on our PC. :p
