The Orc and the Pie: Dragon Magazine #325

Hello? IP?
I think that if something's fun enough to use in a cartoon, you migt as well give credit right away. Better late than never and props for that, but that "no Me in Monte" is IMHO inane. If somebody quotes you, it stands to reason that they give your name as well.

IP? As per Tony, it's a "parody", not a quote. Parody comes with a wink not a nod. It's subtle. It doesn't wear a t-shirt with a big logo. There's no neon in parody. Parody doesn't jump up and down screaming to make a point. It leaves the two-by-four at home. Parody is the anti-wedgie of humor. It lacks a certain amount of sledgehammerness.

Thank goodness the Council of Magisters are running around and protect the trademarked "fun" so it is properly credited. Will "fun" be licensed out for the rest of us soon?

Exactly. There's no neon in parody.

I didn't add Mr. Cook’s name somewhere in the strip because cartoonists simply do not give “credit” to the thing they parody in the selfsame cartoon.

Like when Dork Tower’s John Kovalic makes a cartoon parodying Lord of the Rings or Star Trek or Star Wars or whatever--he doesn’t include, “And thanks to George Lucas” in the last panel.

It’s a tradition or an unwritten rule or something--right or wrong.

THANKS Ferret and others for the encouraging words about my Zogonia strip!!

Of course, the real question would be is stealing an orc's pie an evil act? Should my paladin's god punish him for such an act? What about Lawful? It's certainly not a Lawful act!

Is stealing an orc's pie an evil or unlawful act? I don't know. But I don't think the party ever considered 'stealing' the pie.

When seeing the orc with a pie, Kev suggested, "Let's kill him and take it!" Killing would happen 'before' taking....so no stealing. In other words:

taking first, then killing = stealing
killing first, then taking = LOOTING !!

You know, I wasn't going to post into this thread because I knew I'd get further cracks about Fun Police, but really guys, is it necessary to bash Monte with trite crap like this? He said something on his board, someone reposted that over here (apparently to cause trouble), and now it's being blown out of proportion.

I read Zogonia every month. I like it. I'm glad to get the artist's take on the strip, which I thought was neat. I also know Monte. I guarantee you he didn't say that to be mean or selfish. He's one of the least selfish people that I know.

Now please, let it go.
