The party of five

My current party of five:
  • Bugbear druid--tank and healing all in one.
  • Goblin monk--really an alt.monk class that someone cribbed from our very own house rules forum, IIRC.
  • Changeling rogue/swashbuckler
  • Gnome sorcerer--with essentially no offensive spells, I might add
  • dwarf ranger
We struggle with undead a bit, with no cleric to turn them (and the rogue's special ability invalidated) but I always thought turning Undead made them very boring anyway.

My "fab 5" has always been:
2 warrior types (fighter, barbarian, paladin)
1 cleric
1 arcane caster
1 rogue

2 tanks really gives the casters a chance to shine and sets the rogue up nicely for sneak attacks. Always some room for dual classing (rogue/ranger is nice), but I generally wouldn't add something else (bard, druid, etc) unless there were 6 PCs.

Our current group (rogue, warlock, sorcerer, cleric, ranger, druid, fighter/sorcerer/prestige class) has no full time fighter type as no one wanted to play a "boring fighter". Unfortunately I don't see us lasting much longer before this weakness becomes telling. :\
 


I've got a theory that it's better to leave out the rogue entirely, and have the other PCs pick up the slack on skills. Use a single level of Rogue (or other class with appropriate class-skills) and Able Learner from Races of Destiny (lets you buy cross-class skills for 1pt/rank).

Ranger w/archery and Open Lock, Hide & Move Silently (scout, locksmith, archer - good DEX)
Wizard w/Search & Disable Device (arcane caster, trapfinder - good INT)
Barbarian - tank with extra skill points
Cleric w/Diplomacy (party face, good for turning)

And a wild card - extra tank, extra caster, extra archer, whatever you think you need. Bard for face skills to let the cleric focus on casting and fighting?
