The percentage of women in gaming?

Are there any estimates to the percentage of female gamers?

I remember seeing something about it a few years back, maybe something Ryan Dancey posted.

The reason is that I'm doing a paper that will mention the rise of the number of women gamers coming into the hobby over the years.

Thanks!

My experience through both personal experience and conventions has been that women make up 15-20% of gamers. My (or anyone else's except for WotC's or Paizo's market research) sample size is statistically insignificant, though.

0%

I have studied the people in my group extensively, and none of them show the slightest signs of being female.

Less than 20% is my experience.

I think the typical style of "kill things and take their stuff" doesn't really appeal to most women, which might be why games like Vampire tend to have more female gamers. (Just look at video games. The Sims is really popular with women. DnD usually isn't like the Sims.)

The only females in gaming groups I've been in might be described as "tomboys" or "fantasy nerds".

"Not enough," I think, is the most accurate answer.
Quality fur tunnel. This really is the main point. I found it was easier to organize a gay-majority gaming group than a female-majority one.

20% is the number I remember being thrown around. That's a bit higher than my experience (my experience is about 15%), but I rarely deal with the games that were traditionally female "heavy."

I wonder if that number counted LARPs. In my experience they had an even higher percentage of female players (33-40%, and I never did Vampire type LARPs).

The WotC survey (conducted in 1999, but copyright 2000) had the following percentages:

Tabletop RPGs: 19% female (specified as monthly players)

Computer RPGs: 21% female

Miniature Wargames: 21% female
