The percentage of women in gaming?

10%? 20%? One of those (i have no idea which), or yeah, in between somewhere. That's my incredibly useful conclusion. :p

My own experience has probably been more like 25-30%, but I suspect that is a bit unusual in the scheme of things.

edit --- I imagine it is actually closer to 10%, FWIW.

So far I think the 20% is right for the International average, with certain tables skewing in either direction. My own group has a 45% female make-up (with 60% of the players being female - we have two male DMs, myself included).

Growing up, once my sister decided not to play anymore, the usual number of female players at my table was 0....

The WotC survey (conducted in 1999, but copyright 2000) had the following percentages:

Tabletop RPGs: 19% female (specified as monthly players)

Computer RPGs: 21% female

Miniature Wargames: 21% female
This is the only public data (as opposed to personal anecdotes) that I know of.

All the groups I've played in from uni onwards have had a female gamer, in ratios of 1/4, 2/5, and 1/5 respectively, so I must concur with the 20% thing.

Edit: Oh, and I've never *ever* met a female DM. Just one of those things.

My group - 2 in 6 (my partner & one other)

Monday night Cauldron - 2 in 6 (both partners of other gamers)

Eberron - 3 in 6/7 (2 partners & one other)

Ok we have a lot of common players but two of the three ladies in questions were roleplayers before they joined the group, its only my partner who started RP after we got together

so that puts us above average I guess?
Thinking about it, its been quite a few years (10?) since I've played in a single sex group.....

Heh - and in comparison, for a while I was the only guy in a group with six women. It was a group for new players, and I ended up handing it off to my wife to DM. Much fun.

Good job tracking down that data, Dragon Snack. Those are the only really valid figures I've seen.
