One guy at work sends me Snopes Fodder occasionally, and once I sent him the Snopes link that debunked it (with a polite e-mail explaining that I didn't think it was real), and his reply was kinda vitriolic, as if he hated being proven wrong. Now I just delete them. He's a nice guy in person, and I have to work with hin, so I just let it go. Deleting one e-mail every two weeks for the sake of harmony I can handle.

My wife convinced me that that was preferable to ever responding to anything at all my in-laws say via email too.

You didn't blow it out of proportion. But you probably built up in your mind what her response would be. I'm glad that things were settled easily.
