The Prestige - great movie (spoilers probably)

I went to go see it with a huge group of friends. Amazingly, all of us liked it. That means it's good.

Who has seen it?

I too think it's a good movie; I thought it sounded pretty stupid when I heard the summary and just went with my friends to be socialable. Good thing I didn't voice my opinion before seeing the movie, otherwise I'd have to eat my words somehow.

I thought it was a terrible movie. Or more accurately a decent movie with a fatal, fatal flaw. Unfortunately, my problem with the movie is a total spoiler, so I'll refrain from commenting further (even though the thread says spoilers, I'm not really comfortable discussing it so soon after release).

The Illusionist was a far better movie.

I actually liked it better than the Illusionist (though I did like that movie). I felt the big mystery with Borden was better developed and believable than the convoluted reveal of the Illusionist (even if I did guess it about midway through). I didn't really like the bit with the Tesla invention, though- I felt it added an unnecessary element to an otherwise down to earth and realistic plot, but it didn't ruin the movie for me either.

The performances were excellent, though the standouts in my mind were Andy Serkis and a pleasantly surprising David Bowie.

Saw it today, I enjoyed but had it figured out about half way into it but that did not matter as it was a very good story telling.

I really enjoyed it. While it had a "sci-fi" element in an otherwise grounded movie, I bought into it based on how they introduced and explained it (vs. The Illusionist, which I liked but was disappointed on their "cheat" to explain certain things).

Telsa reminded me of Wulf Ratbane's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen story hour but my google-foo failed me when I tried to find it - any chance someone has a link to that?

I enjoyed it. A good tragedy. I don't get how Cutter is so friendly with Borden at the end, however. He seemed at least somewhat antagonistic towards him through most of the movie and after the ... well maybe the whole framing thing changed things up. I dunno.

I disagree. Several times through out the movie Cutter makes reference to Borden being a true magician who merely lacked the 'glitz' needed to draw in the crowds. In the end, Cutter was sticking to his principles by being 'friendly' with Borden.

My take on it (and I could be completely wrong) is that Cutter thought [ugh, forgetting Bale's character's name) his friend had gone too far with his obsession and was just trying to just put an end to the rivalry and be done with it...although it did seem a little off to me as well. Might hold up better on a second viewing - I was taking in a lot of atmosphere of the movie and might have missed something.

While I liked The Prestige, I too liked The Illusionist a lot more.

Of course, I suspect The Illusionist will get an Academy Award nomination or two, and The Prestige probably will not.
