The problem with magic in D&D

Everybody was flung-poo fighting
Those apes were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing

They were funky Monkey men from funky Monkeytown
They were pooping them up and they were pooping them down
It's an ancient Celestial art mastering flung-poo and fart
From a spray into a slip, and flinging from the hip

Everybody was flung-poo fighting
Those apes were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing

Great stuff.

In my house I simply raise my hand & say "Wench I have a beer itch!"

Magically a beer appears.

Beer magic what more do you need?

I thought that just resulted in a Sharp Pain in the Back of your Head & Something Very Heavy at the Floor Right Behind you.

According to Jack Chick, you can use the PHB to summon demons, so wizards aren't that doomed :D
I've been playing D&D since middle school, and I still can't summon devils, demons or plague my enemies with sorcery. And I don't want to make this a truth in advertising issue, but these powers were implicit in the hobby.

If I had it to do over, I think I would have just learned to play the guitar.

Pah. Trolling.
In D&D it involves the caster's concentration and willpower as well, and their knowledge of the mystical forces they are manipulating. Wizards study for years and years to figure out how to sense these energies and guide them by willpower, strange gestures, and words. Supposedly it's connected to whatever the nature of reality is in a D&D world.

.
Really, I don't recall ever making a non-threatened combat check, nor a will save (the willpower mechanic in 3.x) to cast magic...

But in saying that, hmmmmm....

Wizards on study for years if they take wizard at 1st level... For everyone else, they can pick it up from a bar napkin :)

... for some reason the experssion 'how's about them apples' springs to mind
