The Punisher 'laughably awful'

Exactly! That's an excellent summarization of his whole character right there - Frank Castle is at war.
Wow! You've just convinced me to take a new look at the Punisher comic. I always hated Punisher because he was about as unheroic as I could imagine. Framing it in terms of a war seems much better.

That said, I was expecting to enjoy the movie. After all, the comic book Blade blows chunks, but the movie was fun. (I'm just hoping the rumors of Hannibal King -- the only reason to read a Blade book -- being in Blade 3 are true.) After this, I think I'll wait until the reviews are in, though.

There's another review on the site which says the same...
*blink, blink*

Are ALL of the reviews on that site written in the same style?

If someone wrote a review like either of those on ENworld, I imagine it would be removed for unprofessionalism.

OTOH, they also both seemed to like Hellboy--which is a good measure that they have distinctly different tastes in movies than I do, so the Mrs. and I will probably like Punisher.

Rumor? King has been confirmed to be in Blady Trinity for a while now. He's being played by Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder).

As for Punisher: I was thinking about seeing it in the theater just because it's a genre film and recent Marvel movies have had a good track record with me. This gives me considerable pause. I'll wait to hear from friends and a few online reviewers that I typically agree with to see it, now. Certainly not something I'll see opening day, which is how I usually like to see films.

Harry's got very little cred with me, and that goes for his site. The only reviewer there I give any props to is Moriarity, and his review of the movie was pretty positive:

Harry liked Intolerable Cruelty, for crying out loud. I'll see how the reviews pan out this week, but if his site is the key dissenting voice, I'm unworried.

If EVERYBODY hates it, I'll give it a miss.

Ooh, the tension. :D

I'm with barsoomcore; Moriarty is the only AICN reviewer whose opinion I actually give credit to. Since Moriarty liked The Punisher, I'll likely be going to see it this weekend.

And don't get me started on Harry Knowles. Every time I read one of Harry's reviews, I can actually feel myself getting stupider. :p

Just because it's Harry giving it a bad review doesn't make it a good flick. Besides Intolerable Cruelty, is there anything else he didn't like that you did? I get more worried when Harry gets into gush mode about something. As for Moriarty liking it - I was happy when he gave it a positive review because up to that point all I heard was bad things. But it's not just Harry giving it bad reviews, others are doing the same and that is what gives me pause. That and I wasn't too interested in the film to start with. The trailers didn't help...

Gotta wonder about that, though. Is it really a genre film? He's a guy with guns, in a normal world. That makes it an action flick, perhaps, but not really a superhero genre film, no matter what the source material.

I don't know, I'd have to see it to know if it's in the comic-movie genre. Even if it's not, action is close enough for me to be considered in the general geek-movie genre. And source material always plays a role when considering what is in the comic-movie genre, to me. If the changes are drastic enough from the comic book to not even resemble it at all, then I would agree. But I haven't seen the film nor read any of the comics, so I really wouldn't know.

Oh, good; thanks for the Moriarty link. I usually like to read his side by side with a Harry review if possible. Now, Harry can gush but hell, so can I. I find I'm more likely to agree with a Harry review than not, but at least a few times I've been 180 degrees from him on a film.
