Are ALL of the reviews on that site written in the same style?

That's pretty much the thought that occurred to me. When you see someone going to such over-the-top lengths to paint a unilaterally negative impression of a movie (or an over-the-top unilaterally positive one for that matter) you really ought to question how rational their assessment is. He kept comparing it to other bad comic book flicks like Corman's Fantastic Four. Geez, unrelenting much?

Having said that, I was surprised to read they actually incorporated the characters from Garth Ennis's run on the series (Mr. Bumpo, Spaker Dave, the Russian). Those darkly absurd characters probably don't translate well.

re

Frank Castle is not an ex-Marine? That is enough of a reason for me not to see it right there. I was really hoping they would stick to the comic book. I wanted Frank Castle to be a New York Italian ex-Marine bad ass. It explained so much about the character: his training with explosives and guns, his attitude about criminals, his sense of self-discipline, his ability to plan military style operations.

Unbelievable that they would be so stupid as to change the characters military background. The punisher character is very cool. Hopefully someday, someone makes a movie that gets it right.

I'm with barsoomcore; Moriarty is the only AICN reviewer whose opinion I actually give credit to. Since Moriarty liked The Punisher, I'll likely be going to see it this weekend.

And don't get me started on Harry Knowles. Every time I read one of Harry's reviews, I can actually feel myself getting stupider. :p

I stopped reading Harry Knowles' reviews after my doctor told me that it was causing brain damage. ;)

As I understand it, he still has a military background. Only now he's Army Special Forces rather then a Marine.

The key point about Castle wasn't that he was a Marine, but that he was a Vietnam veteran. You can't exactly retain that in a movie set in the modern day, unless you want to make the character 50-60 years old.

Desert Storm veteran would be an easy enough substitution. Or an Afghanistan veteran. Army Special Forces in lieu of Marine works fine from a story standpoint also. :\

I dunno -- I thought the first movie was OK. Wasn't great, but it wasn't a steaming heap, as implied by many posters here. I'll still see this one, once I get caught up on other movies that are running in theaters now that I want to see first. :)

Yeah... In particular considering that in the series the movie is loosely based on, Castle effortlessly wastes a hit-man hired to kill him, saying something along the lines of: "He was a sniper in Desert Storm - 20 confirmed kills. Not a bad little war - only problem with it..." guy's body hits sidewalk "...it wasn't Vietnam." :\

The whole point (and I'm not a fan, BTW, I don't care that they changed it) was that Vietnam is a very specific breeding ground, in fiction, for the "disturbed loner with gruesome past" type of character, and that's what the original Castle seemed to be all about - once his family is killed, it all resurfaces. Substituting something else doesn't work.

Doesn't Look Good...

Another bad review:

http://www.latinoreview.com/films_2004/lionsgate/thepunisher/review.html

Here's a highlight:

"Somewhere in Eastern Europe, Dolph Lundgren is laughing his ass off. He’s on the floor rolling around in glee. For years, his version of The Punisher has been lambasted as the worst comic book adaptation to hit the big screen. That mantle has now been passed to Thomas Jane, Jonathan Hensleigh, John Travolta, and Lion’s Gate Films. Yes, dear readers, in a stunning turn of events, the 2004 Punisher eclipses the original as being unremittingly awful in every possible way. This movie is so bad, so disappointing; it boggles the mind and leaves one stupefied. Fans of the comic book will be crushed. Their hopes and dreams for a faithful, action-packed film have been utterly wasted."
