The Rat Bastard’s Club is now recruiting new members!

Myself, I would need more information to even consider becoming a member of "The Rat Bastard Club". What I have read here just convinces me that you are elitist ( which is not necc. a BAD thing, unless you don't get in :D !), but what are the details?

Member benefits?

Meeting schedules/format?

Dues/Duties?

Exposure/Inside track for earning .01 Cents a word on a d20 esd?

Or just an ego boost resulting from being solected as a member by your peers?

Seems to me, great people/DM's like PirateCat are willing to help out any poor shlub, not just rat-bastards.

PS- Don't pout! Those of you who don't make the cut can always join the Lincoln Park Trixie Chicks!

BFG, I can understand how it looks elitist; we're discussing ways of changing that.

The value of the forum is that it's got a very high signal-to-noise ratio. Off-topic posts are rare, and off-topic threads are nonexistent. And by limiting access to the forum to really creative folks with somewhat similar philosophies of DMing, it means that you get a huge concentration of very creative answers to questions you ask.

But if it comes across as too elitist for your tastes, I understand.

Pielorinho called it: a very high signal-to-noise ratio, no OT discussion allowed, and a spot where your players can't accidentally uncover the thread. I don't know that it's of much use as an ego boost, but I think seeing how other folks do their sneaky DMing has helped my campaign substantially. When I get stuck on a plot point and want quick inspiration, the RB club is where I usually turn.

As a result, it wouldn't even be useful to a lot of folks don't need that sort of resource. Heck, you probably already know if it would be useful or not, judging on your own campaign. :D

Elitist has become a bad word in the modern world, but it shouldn't be. It just means that a certain standard of quality is expected, and that membership choices will be based on current members' best attempt to achieve that quality. That means only inviting the best you can, and limiting membership to a small size.

To put it simply, if it was open to everyone, it would be ENWorld, and we've already got that. (And if it was also open to anything you felt like posting, it would be rec.games.frp.dnd, and we've got that already, too).

If I don't get invited, well, tough on me. If I really want it, I'll either try to persuade them to reconsider, or start my own club.

Which is the other point: elitism cuts both ways, and just because they don't let you in their club doesn't mean you can't be in a club (possibly a better one).

Thanks guys, you are definitely doing a good job of describing the benefits of your organization!

Also, I think applicants should understand what is expected of them, so they can pull their own weight, contributing as much as benefiting.

For example, how often would a member be expected to visit/post? ( I'm assuming the Rat Bastards probably meet in some type of Yahoo message board group or similar )

I personally would want to make sure I have the time to be a valued contributor, and not just another name on a group list.

I apologize if I am coming off as bit pedantic here, that's not my intent...

The only downside, as I see it, is if membership has a set number limit, rather than a skill limit.

It would be too bad to see good posters (Seasong, etc, etc) get excluded based on a imposed seat count limit.

Other than that, I'm all for elitism!

There's good reasons for a seat limit, too, of course. Communities of different sizes have different dynamics - if they like the current dynamic, getting too big (or growing too fast) can kill that.

And I don't think they're just looking for good posters, or they'd have to open the ranks up a lot more ;). They seem to be looking for a particular kind of poster who will fit into the subculture they've developed. I may or may not fit that, and I'd rather be turned down correctly than be invited in and then feel a need to drop out.

Seat limits also insure the highest quality among high quality people, but that can get politically nasty, so I'll leave it :).

This is a good question, and one I often contemplate as I derive great benefit from the RBC but sometimes I feel I don’t contribute as much as I should.

There really is no set rule for how much you can benefit vs. how much you contribute. Everyone just helps everyone else and when there is a question you answer it to the best of your ability and if something sparks especially well and really gets your creative juices flowing then you engage in some deep brainstorming on the issue, which usually benefits you as well as the person asking the question because you get ideas from it too.

So it’s really just a community where we all help each other as much as we can.

As for where we meet, its an EZboard that is password protected.

Also Seasong, you hit the nail on the head with why we limit the number of people we allow in the RBC.

Well, I will throw my hat in to the ring and see if it salutes...

So if you think you fit these criteria and you want to be a member of the Rat Bastards Club then please answer the following questions:

1. What style of game do you like to run? Any particular setting? High-level? Low-Level? Epic fantasy or 'grim & gritty'?

I prefer Mid to High Magic and fairly epic. In my current Campaing, the players are currently level 7 but they are involed with a conflict between two level 16+ NPCs. A few Epic level characters appear every few decades.

2. Why do you think you are a Rat-Bastard?

Hmm...Because I am a rodent who does not know who is his father?

3. Post an Iron DM submission using these ingredients: (Note* we are watching the official Iron DM competition and so will also base our selection on that competition).

There is no limit on length; however, you don’t want to bore us so keep it reasonable.

Pirate Ship
Quaal's Feather Token
Saddened Half-Orc
Windmill
Succubus
Skeleton Key

On a desolate bluff, seperating the Ocean from the Bay of the capital city, is a light house, tended by Dimkin, the Half-Orc outcast of the capital city. The light house used to be a wind-mill for a nearby village, but it was deserted. The inner workings of the ex-mill help rotate the lantern for the lighthouse.

Dimkin will tell anyone who cares to listen his tale. "It was the mother of all storms. Our good captain decided it was better to seek safe harbour and face the possbility of the Law, then to let our Priate ship be smashed along the rocks and all of us be lost. Jail is easier to escape the then watery grave. So we put about the head to the Bay. I was on the watch, and lo did I see a maiden riding a giant swan apon the waters. I thought I was mad, but then others of the crew saw her as well. She was the most beautiful maid we had all seen. While distracted we ran apon some rocks, the ship smashed and took on water. We grabed what we could and then leapt to safety of the launches. I did grab this key. It was the master key to all the chests on board the ship. Little good it does me now. For that loot is sunk in the rough waters below.

I look out and on some nights, I can see the maid on her swan. I feel both delight for her beauty but saddend for the loss of my ship and crew, and the wealth burried beneith the waves. I took this mill and created a warning to others to mind the rocks lest they fall to the vissage of the swan maiden."

The party an attempt to salvage the lost ship. Dimkin will offer the key in return for the party also dealing with the Swan Maiden. The Swan Maiden is a Succubus that uses her Quaal's Feather Token (swan boat) to lure ships upon the rocks.

4. Do you have a story hour? Home Page? Post any links here that you think could help us know you better.

My Calisium Campaing public site. I will mail you the private site and password. That shows the adventures and my personal notes
