The Retaking of Forgehold - 4E

"This conversation of ears is in fact fairly revolting. We will bring back something from each as proof." Mira says with a shiver.

"Lets get going, the sooner we leave, the sooner we can get back, and the linger we have to rest before we leave for Forgehold."

[sblock=DM OOC]Let's drop the ears discussion. Assume you will take a "token" from the kobold and there will be no swindles, I swear.

I will assume that you are all going to do a 15 mile dusk/nighttime walk to the Manor filled with critters with better night vision than you. Any objections? Check the OOC Thread for some administrivia.[/sblock]

"I dont like the idea of adventuring into ruins filled with critters at night... but if thats what we have to do..." says Angel. "We must not forget that we will be fighting in their own environment, so we will be at a disadvantage."

Angel Looks up to the sky saying "This will be a long night..."

"I agree with Angel, I hadn't known that the manor was so far away. I think we should at the inn tonight and leave at dawn so we have the time we need once we get there before it gets dark." Mira says, changing her position once the information on how long to get to the place was conveyed.

-''Err, yeah, I didn't think it would take that long to reach. Damn your small legs!''

[The following is concerning marching orders. It was OOC but I thoughtt it more fun IC]

-''No, no, Mira! I'm not taking the front if the guy who like to spit acid over half the battle field is behind me!'' he exclaims.

-''Beside, you don't travel in a file unless you have no choice. Narrow corridors, jungle... something like that. Because smart enemies won't be kind enough to open fire on the heavily armored guy in front. They'll let the lead pass and charge us right in the middle, engaging the spellcasters. Not good.''

-''Okay, first of all, I take front and center. Because let's face it, that's what I do best.'' He winks. ''If you swallow more than you can chew, I can disengage you, but onkly if you stay close by me.''

He then walks to Teslayn.

-''After that, we need the Spit Master in front and to my left. That way he has a free field ahead of him and can spew as much acid as he wants without hurting me. He is even on my shield side so I won't get a bit of spit in my face! Early in the fight is the best opportunity to catch as many critters as you can without melting the skin of your friend, and you need to bet at the front to take it.''

Then he adresses Aelek.

-''The Red Lobster is on my right but a step behind. He needs to be there because, let's face it, waving his sword from the middle of the pack doesn't do anyone any good. He's just a step back to protect himself from charges. He ain't wearingas much armor as me and the Green Wonder, after all. It also better protects our next friend.''

Mal turns to Arden.

-''Admiral Stutter will stand behind me, a bit to the left of the blushing man and thus he is covered nicely. Just don't catch me in one those damn fire burst, I like my new eyebrows.''

Looking at his sister.

-''Mira is just behind the front line and to the left of the amazing babbling man. She uses her shuriken from behind the front and darts in to stab people in the throat when juicy opportunities arise. Or when the frontline is about to collapse.''

Finally he adresses Angel :

-''The She-Devil hottie closes the group. She burns people to a crisp and if we get surprised from the rear, which is always unpleasant, I trust that she is tough enough to hang on until we adjust.''

Looking at the whole group, concludes :

-''And this, ladies and gentleman, is a functional battle formation. Oh, and by the way; if you wonder why Mira didn't get a nickname, it's because I consider that having me as a brother is punishment enough.'' he winks.

Hopefully you'll take the nickname with a grain of Salt. There is also a bit of Josh Holloway in Mal. ;)

Some metagame perpective :

Tes Breath weapon is opening round gambit. It's best when the battlefield is full of enemies and as few as possible have made contact and mingled in our rank. That's why I want him at the front. If we are in a single file, he can be between 6 and 12 square aways from the front where most encounter starts, and his move his 5.

Angel has 30 hp : She can survive pretty much anything (that is level appropriate) springing on her by surprise from the rear and with range 10 on most powers she can blast above the group. That makes her perfectly acceptable to hold the rear. Especially since in my set up, Mal and Tes are just 4 square away and Mira is 2. This might just be 2 and 1 if we travel packed (no space between position) She can freely focus on any melee based non-minion. This position is only strategically unsound if we are swarmed by melee minions and all the tough monsters are ranged. Than they might be firing from outside her range. *shrug* Then we adapt.

[sblock=OOC]It's not that I disagree with your reasoning mal, but keep in mind that the party's best option to vanquish minions is Arden's thunderwave, which is at will and targest fortitude. Three guys at the front is a bit much, it's going to be difficult. And then, the fighter's and paladin's "tank" abilities should be enough to keep enemies far for long enough. 30 HP seem a lot, but Angel isn't going to have that great of an AC I think, so she SHOULDN'T engage in melee.Maybe two melee guys in front?[/sblock]

"I agree with almost everything." answers Aelek. "Don't like that nick. I'm more brown then red and I don't walk in a plate that look like a lobster shell. I'll leave your genious mind to work on something else. I also saw you didn't dared to give a nick to Mira. She seems to tame you well."

"More seriously, I think this is good. We should stay large enough so that Arden can move between you and either me or Teslayn so he can do his ligthning trick. If to many decide to target him, you can easily push them with your shield, so he can withdraw in the middle of the group."

[SBLOCK=OOC]I wouldn't be too scared about Angel. My tabletop Warlock have been holding a front too in a combat. He was on the edge but he survived.[/SBLOCK]

for the sake of visualization ease: thunderwave is a thunder damage type power. I think it's safe to say it's akin to 3e sonic[/sblock]

I believe the two of you will be enough in the frontlineArden tells Aelek and Mal. We may need Sir Bloodburn in the rear. Our fair ladies may cover the sides of our second rank. We can move to a line formation if needed. I suspect the kobolds may force us to follow them in thight spaces He then proceeds to create a tiny formation scheme in his hands with faint letters of light, looking like this:
A-M
AAM
-T-
After a few seconds, he moves them in his palm in another shape:
M(al)
M(ira)
A(elek)
A(rden)
A(ngel)
T(eslayn)

While explainig his proposal. [sblock=OOC]prestidigitation ftw[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]credit to Shalimar for this. I agree with her on formations.[/sblock]
