"The Ring" and "Ghost Ship"

I gotta say that I am really liking the use of special effects in the horror movies they are throwing at us this Holloween season. I think they may be stepping things up due to the increase of CGI in action films and the rise of fantasy/sci fi films in recent years. Seems like we went through that lull of horror films, with only a handful of satirical movies being made on the genre like the Scream series, and some star-powered but otherwise not-so-remarkable films like the I Know What You Did... bunch. Have I just not been paying attention?

There have been some okay ones, but mostly suspense over horror I think.

One a side note, is Ghost Ship a remake? I remember seeing a box cover very much like it (the ship with the teeth) when I worked in a video store in the 90's. It's been bugging me becasue I can't find anything on it.

Considering that the new film is produced by Dark Castle, I'm pretty sure it's a remake. Dark Castle's other 2 films were 13 Ghosts and House on Haunted Hill.

I believe that Dark Castle exists solely to remake films produced by the late William Castle (known for his promotional work and gimmicks like "emergo" and "percepto"). His daughter may even be involved in the company.

There are 3 films that I know of called Ghost Ship (and I haven't seen any of them, so don't ask for details).

The first, I believe, dealt with a mutiny or something like that (a non-supernatural story). The 2nd had a haunted luxury liner (same as the new one, so it may be based on this). And the last was made in the '90's, but I don't know anything about it.

You can also check the imbd.com. They have alot of movie info, although they can sometimes get the facts wrong (I've seen a few actors listed in films they never made).

Hope that helps.

I don't know about Ghost Ship, but The Ring is a remake of a Japanese film of the same name. I saw the original a couple of weeks ago, and was pretty pleased with it. I hope the remake is decent.

Some friends of mine who saw a sneak preview a couple months ago say otherwise. Then again, not all the postproduction was complete in that version. Hopefully, they will be changing bits of the very inconsistant story.
