Second thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

Did you also play the second module of the series: The Assassin's Knot? How did that go for you?

If I remember correctly we had two TPKs in this one. First we ran into a bunch of ghouls that could only be harmed by magic weapons, of which we had none. We tried to run but poor saves against paralysis took us down. The next try we attempted to sneak the back of the ruined castle but an evil MU fireballed us and a bunch of bugbears finished us off. I love this game!
 


i've read and converted L3 (available only in the 1999 25th Anniversary boxed set) for my OD&D. but i've yet to run it.

the previous 2 i ran many years ago.

I based an entire campaign using this module. The town given in the module was the party's base of operations till about 13th level. I loved it, but I never used L2 or L3, they came out much after the story had progressed beyond them.
 

When I played in this adventure (back in 2E), my halfling thief sounded the Horn of Valhalla in the last battle against the wraith, the zombire and the skelter (or whatever it was) - and of course the evil berserkers attacked us as well and the Priest of Tempus was turned into wraith spawn.

I ran it years later for my "The Oath" campaign - and two PCs bought it - one was crited in the courtyard fighting the bugbears - and another was left "hidden away" at negs on the upper level while the rest of the party explored the lower levels and when they returned they found him strung up and disembowled.

The dwarven priest of Thor has a great time clearing out the "bearbug" nursery with his hammer. . "Come and get some lovin' Chitlins!" he called out them as he smashed their skulls open. . . :D
 

I first played this adventure back in the mid-80's. We had a lot of fun, but I think we wound up getting hosed by the deck of many things and then the wierd room that wipes your memory and between those two events/locations, that party was wiped out. I think we tried to play another group that went in search of the 1st group, and then stumbled on the wraith and died to it. All of us were only like 1st or 2nd level characters and didn't stand a chance against it.

I later picked up the adventure and ran it. The party was only about 3rd level at the start, but they managed to clear the keep and avoid the various pitfalls for a very successful adventure. They did a few of the side quests, first which helped them gain some exp and treasure.

I managed to pick up L2 Assassins knot quite a bit later and ran it for that group, but with a different party. They eventually managed to find the bad guys, but not before a few more assassinations transpired.

Later, I DM'ed this for a 2nd edition campaign which included some rather good roleplayers. It was a lot of fun for them. They infiltrated the assassin's hideout and managed to wipe them in a timely manner.

Someone made a Neverwinter Nights module based on Bone Hill which I've also played. They totally changed up some of the areas in/near the keep which I found rather annoying, but otherwise it was an interesting attempt at putting it into NWN format.

Someday I would consider running L1 and L2 again. Hopefully by then, someone else will have done the conversion to 3.5 rules to make the job a bit easier for me.
 

Gee it's been alot of years, I can hardly remember the outcome.

I do recall the players all having a rip-roaring time gambling with some clerics. :D

I borrowed the town map several times for other campaigns. It's got a bit of everything, a nice little setup.

I never got L2, until the recent 'free' download. Haven't used it.
 

Wow, that is an oldie but a goodie.

We played L1 and L2, loving them, and ended up building a campaign based off of the town and surrounding area. It was great fun, there were both well-written modules with lots of interesting NPC's.

I actually ran L1 a few times for slightly different groups, changing up things to keep it interesting for the few players that were among more than one group. Even though they went through it a second (and in one case, a third) time, it was fun every time.

Good old fashioned D&D.
 

There was a ton to do, you could do it in any order or not at all -- it was pretty plot-free as I recall. Good memories of it, that's for sure!
