It also likely exceeds the expiration date on Earth's time in the "habitable zone" of Sol (the sun grows hotter with time, you see), so your canned goods are perhaps the least of your worries.

Yep. You don't even need them to be supermassive. You don't need them to be black holes, either. There are other "compact objects" that'll generate a GRB through collision.

Gamma Ray Bursts, however, are typically directional - for active galaxy nucleii, they are typically directed along the axis of galactic rotation, such that most of the stars aren't in the line of fire.
