The Spirit

I've actually seen the movie. I thought it was great - a lot of fun, and I liked the little sight gags. Samual L. Jackson's "scenery chewing" is what his character is supposed to be - an over the top mad scientist/crime lord.

It's a dark comedy in the pulp-noir style. All the characters are extreme examples of genre stereotypes, exaggerated for comedic effect.

I was kind of hoping Valkyrie would bomb even worse. Hasn't America had enough of Cruise by now?

I don't get the anti-Cruise thing. I think he is a good actor. He was great in Tropic Thunder, not that long ago. I don't get this sudden piling-on that seems to be going on concerning Cruise.

I don't think it is an acting thing. If it was his movies would flop horribly. The problem many seem to have is his real life personality. The couch jumping, Matt Lauer interview, and Brooke Shields comments are examples of this. He often gives off on impression that he thinks he is better than everyone else and people react by wanting him to fail and get his comeuppance.

--insert obligatory Magnolia shout-out here--

(I also like Cruise in Minority Report and War of the Worlds. I try to separate the actor's --or author, musician, etc.-- work from their personal dramas and/or nuttiness.)

Absolutely. That one was amazing. I didn't recognize him at all till the credits rolled!

Still don't like him ... But I can't ignore a good film just because of that! ;)

Because he's a preening jackass gone over-the-rainbow. Becaus he shoots his mouth off and says things like "psychology is a 'made-up' science" and vocally condemns people who take medication to cope with mental illness. Because he is the living embodiment of every self-important celebrity who thinks being a movie star makes them an authority on real-world issues. Because he acted like an insane idiot on Oprah and abused furniture. Little things like that. Plus, he looks ridiculous with that eye-patch.

I enjoyed his Tropic Thunder role. Of course, it's enjoyable because it flies in the face of everything we've come to expect from Cruise: he's not insisting on dominating the film, and not oozing smarm as he portrays himself as the coolest guy in human history. He's playing an ugly jerk, and it's a hoot. Maybe now we can get a Mission Impossible movie that has an MI team that doesn't consist of basically one egomaniac.

Btw, if you think the "piling-on" has been all that sudden, then you're far from the pulse. People have been waiting for this guy to implode for years.

Tom is only good if he has a minor role in the film, like in Tropic Thunder (didn't immediately recognize him in all those makeups).

As a leading actor ... post Risky Business ... he sucks.

RE: Mr. Cruise

I've seen him in several movies. I've only liked him in a few:

Legend
Risky Business
Top Gun

That's pretty much it. I can tolerate him in a lot of things, though- he was OK in Minority Report and Last Samurai.

I have a little problem with his pontificating, but I also dislike when his ego seeps into the movie roles...like when his character in Liquid Sky gets arrested. As his mug-shot is taken, the photographic background indicates his height is 6'. Yeaaaaaaahhhhhh...
