The State of Our Hobby

Is that a euphemism?
Want to know the funny, plz. ;)

No, but it's a systemic problem within our society, our hobby, and the world at large.
Fascinating. But as a consumer, it turns out to be a benefit, not a problem. Go figure! Now, if you hate capitalism and free markets and are anti-consumer, please let us know so at least we'll have an idea where you're coming from. [But if instead you are trying to equate how I wish to spend both my free time and entertainment dollar with how I approach anything else, you are sadly mistaken. Again.]

So your solution is a kumbaya everyone hold hands and be happy* solution?
Have you tried tapping your heels together also?

If I thought it'd help get rid of the bittnerness and negativity on these boards, you bet your bottom dollar I'd suggest we sing kumbaya.*

And you'd be the first I'd invite.

* I liked your little small font comment so much I have to copy it. Unfortunately, I'm not insisting anything - please review the thread, especially those pertinent posts where I say things like "I'm not insisting anyone like 4E". We good now? Cool. Thanks.

Nope. I don't hate capitalism. Nor free markets. Nor am I anti-consumer. Hopefully that allays some of your fears.

And I still think our splintering is...sad. Again - this is more emotional than logical. I'll give you that. Everything - well, most of what - you say seems intelligent and makes sense.

Yet, I still find it hard to agree with you, and I can't figure out if that's because of your arguments or for the way you present them.

Probably a little of both.

Yeah, I know that. (That was the hyperbole part of my post, put there to lead into the actual, meaningful, statement/warning: Don't confuse how I make decisions as a consumer with how I make decisions about anything else. Your whole "society" and "world at large" comment really does make no sense as a follow-up to my first post.)

*shrug* I didn't present any arguments. I just noted how things worked for me and my friends when it comes to consumer issues. No arguments on my part!

(But yeah - probably a little of both nonetheless!)

I don't think you and I are too far apart on our views. I care the most about my group and the amount of enjoyment we get out of gaming. That's first and foremost. In my original post I was just bemoaning the fact that it seemed many groups/individuals were going different directions, and I worried (incorrectly, it would appear) that such a dispersion would undermine our hobby's economic health. I mentioned above that I think I was wrong and yet I still can't shake the feeling that this is an unfortunate turn of events.

Yeah, it's cool. I understand. You certainly never said anyone needed to do anything. You just associated them *not* doing it with the world being less than it could be. And that is different. Glad we understand each other. Peace and Love Brother!!!

Heh. See? Many of the problems and rancor associated with messageboards would never occur if folks (including yours truly) would just review the thread prior to arbitrarily posting stuff.

There needs to be some shared understandings, some norms, between us gamers....

Is this the "everybody should use Windows" argument?;)

Your heart is in the right place W.P. Keep us all coming together. The means? It won't happen that way.

The point that the market is fragmenting more right now is spot on. (My next campaign is going to be Mutants and Masterminds.) This too will come around, but it's hard to say if it will reunite after 4E or after an unpredictable event.

Is it really or is it just redistributing and shifting mostly into existing fragments?
