I'm not a fan of the 4th edition tiefling. I would like it if it were just one of the many off-shoots of devil kin with the whole "made the pact" background, but I would have preferred the old tiefling. The old tiefling allowed players to come up with their own origins instead of being shoehorned into the one background.

To the best of my knowledge there are no 1st ed AD&D tieflings.

Indeed, he probably means 2nd/3rd, but frankly, there's no such thing as "2E/3E Tieflings", because they have severe differences (not sure 3E even has the appearance table!). I don't think anyone actually wants 3.XE Tieflings, though (if they like those they probably prefer 2E ones).

I didn't play Planescape in 2E, so I can't say that I miss the tieflings from then. But they sound more diverse than the current selection, so I'd welcome having the choice available in the PHB.

I never had a problem with the 4e teifling fluff.

I just always hated how they look.

I would much rather see (as in, art) both kinds in the PH.

There a chance with the MM getting 32 new pages, that the Planetouched race, which likely include the old tiefling, will ned up in the MM, not a certainty, but a possiblity.

Just to add another option not listed in the poll - I honestly don't care what kind of them is presented where. Once they're beyond the standard Human, elf, half-elf, dwarf, gnome halfling, half-orc, I find the rest to just be gravy. Tieflings? Dragonborn? Warforged? All about the same.

Am I the only one who parses races in different settings as mostly separate entities? Statistically tieflings in 2e/4e/5e are very similar. The only real dis-similarities are origin story and physical description. I suppose the real problem is if some pre-existing setting information was changed. I mean, if they published a new version of Planescape and used the 4e origin story along with that, I'd be pretty upset. But, if I'm playing in a Nentir Vale setting, I'd use the 4e origin story. So, its all about context.

So, I have no preference for default assumptions, even though I'm a huge Planescape lover. Options are good. Setting retcons are bad.
