I never played Planescape. For me, the 4E Tiefling's appearance is the iconic tiefling appearance. The 5E Tiefling is close enough to the 4E tiefling that I like it. It would have been nice to have all those nifty tables for the people who want them, but that seems like more of a splatbook option to me--it should be saved for the Planescape campaign guide, which mentions that these tiefling appearances replace the appearance of the tiefling from the PHB.

I picked the "don't care, since the stats are good at emulating both, I will let PCs pick if they want to be traditional tieflings or infernalings and they can tailor the look accordingly."

Wait, wasn't that an option.

Won't be buying 5e and have no particular plans to play it, but fwiw, tiefling origin and appearance are trivial things to change. I've been using Planescape tieflings for years, regardless of what my rulebooks say. In 4e, I even let players choose the energy type associated with their tiefling's damage resistance and infernal wrath.

There is no option for me to say this: I just don't care

And if it gets used in my group, and someone wants it a way other than is presented we just change the fluff.
