Possibly because in those stripped down rules the only IA supported is an OA.

This isn't the case in the core rules.

Player's Handbook page 268 said:
You can take only one immediate action per round, either an immediate interrupt or an immediate reaction. If you haven’t taken an immediate action since the end of your last turn, you can take one when a trigger allows you to. You can’t take an immediate action on your own turn.

The bolded emphasis is mine.

EDIT: Ninja'd

It's probably just sloppy editing, but I *can* think of a reason to make the power an Immediate Reaction rather than a free action, although it's a corner case.

You can take any number of free actions. You can only take 1 immediate action each round. Assuming you had a way to get multiple uses of the item daily in a single round (okay, big assumption), you could immobilize more than one target with OAs.

Better wording would be to make it a free action, usable only once per round.

It does seem like this article wasn't vetted as well as some of the previous ones were - but I forgive it its flaws for all the sweet toys.

I think the reasons that these weapons are immediate reactions are that they are designed to be used to immobilize an opponent on an attack of opportunity.
I.e. you need the opponent to attempt to move (or be moving) to use there own weight to impale them!

It should say Free Action. I'm sure they (edit: Imapling and Mind Rending weapons) will receive errata.

And for those who said you can't tie a free action to a trigger, check out the Daily powers of Flaming Weapon, Frost Weapon, etc, which are triggered on a hit via a free action.

There would many many better ways to say this in the power description, like having the trigger be hitting with the weapon while making an OA.

4e is an exception based game. Those weapons, and only those weapons, allow you to take specific immediate actions despite the "must be triggered on another turn" clause in the general rule.

I'm assuming they were added to make the item slightly more costly than a typical daily activation on a hit.
