I remember reading an article somewhere that had a bunch of examples of unusual race/class combinations: half-orc wizard, gnome paladin, etc.; kind of an "un-iconics" rogues gallery.

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? Was it on Wizards website, or somewhere else? I can't seem to find it anymore.

You might be remembering the characters running around the In Character boards at the same time as the Iconics a couple of years back. They were collectively known as the Non-iconics or somesuch.

Indeed, are the Iconics and Non-iconics still around? I know the games they both were in died a while back, but some "characters" kept popping up from time to time regardless for a while.
