The Ur-Fish (Cydra players, stay out!)

the Jester

Legend
First of all, if you play in my game, get the hlel out of here! You don't want to spoil the fun, do you?

Ahem. Now that that's taken care of, I'm a little concerned about this cool monster I made- I'm not quite sure how high the CR ought to be. I'm currently thinking about 22? But there are a few specific things I'd like to point out about this guy that make me want to get a second opinion. For instance:

-look at those hit points! Combine with a miss chance... and a great AC... hm.

-Sweeping Bite is a great special attack form, but is it too great? This thing doesn't use the standard rules on swallowing whole- you could swing a greataxe in there- but it leaves its swallowed victims staggered, so they can only take a single attack on its gut each round.

So where would you peg the CR on this thing?

The Ur-Fish

AC: 40/50% miss chance (-4 size, -1 dex, +25 natural, +10 expertise), touch 15/50%, flat-footed 30/50%
BAB/Grapple: +40/+71
Full Attack: Bite +31 melee (6d6+42/19-20) (includes adjustments for Combat Expertise and Power Attack)
Space/Reach: 20’/15’

Alignment: NE
Skills: Bluff +44, Concentration +35, Diplomacy +24, Listen +46, Search +21, Sense Motive +28, Spot +46

Here, lurking in contemplation, is a powerful and unique creature that began life as a simple fish. But then it became a kuo-toa wizard’s familiar; and then, both of them were exposed to strange Underdark radiations and planar energies; and to top it all off, the radiation from the reactor here have changed this thing into a terrible intellect and a magical entity of incredible malignancy. It is constantly surrounded by an inky corona, but it looks like some mad Jack Kirby fish-demon. The Ur-Fish speaks Kuo-toan, Undercommon, Drow and Dwarven. It is almost three centuries old and very potent in its power; it has never met anything else of comparable strength, and so it is very arrogant.

Frightful Presence (Su): Any creature within 100’ of the ur-fish that sees it attack, use its sweeping bite or charge must make a Will save, DC x, or become shaken for as long as they can see the ur-fish and for one hour afterward. Regardless of whether it succeeds or fails, once a creature rolls this save they are immune to the ur-fish’s frightful presence for 24 hours. The save DC is charisma-based.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will- see invisibility, shatter; 1/day- bestow curse, blindness/deafness, darkness, greater dispel magic. Caster level 40th; save DCs 11 + spell level. The save DCs are charisma-based.

Sweeping Bite (Ex): As a standard action the ur-fish can bite all targets in a 10’ cube, rolling a single bite attack against all of them. Any creature that suffers damage must make an opposed grapple check or be swept into the ur-fish’s mouth. On its next turn, as an attack action, the ur-fish can attempt another opposed grapple check to swallow its victims whole. Swallowed victims suffer 2d6+15 points of bludgeoning damage plus 1d6 points of acid damage for each round within the monster’s belly. The belly is AC 30, and each victim must either succeed at two opposed grapple checks or else inflict 60 points of damage to the stomach with a slashing weapon in order to free themselves. Because of the immense size of the ur-fish’s gullet, characters swallowed can wield any weapon and can take any action. Unfortunately, within the creature’s gut they are constantly being thrown around by stomach motion, and are effectively staggered. Moreover, victims must make Concentration checks to cast a spell or manifest a power (DC 10 + last damage dealt).

Inky Corona (Su): The ur-fish is always surrounded by a corona of ink that gives it concealment (50% miss chance). The inky corona cannot be eliminated without a wish, limited wish, alter reality or miracle.

Note that the ur-fish typically attacks with a -10 from Improved Combat Expertise and a -10 from Power Attack.

Wo-ouch.
For what its worth, Upper_Krust's system seems to indicate CR 28-29 (or CR 21-22 "WotC dragon CR").

I see you have no Swim skill listed. Assuming it has no ranks in it, the modifier should be +23 (+15 Str, +8 racial)

Cool, The monster is god good. CR arround 23-25, by the ear. But is a 25th level mage wins initiative (the Ur-fish with is -1 is at a big disadvantage), and knows what to do I suspect that they could take a sizable chunk out of it.

I would lower the hit dice a bit (I'm not sure how much, more then 10 for sure) and lower the Fast healing (or turn it into regeneration). I can't think of much else....

I agree with Ferret - I'd drop the hit dice to about 30 (and the caster level for the spell-like abilities alongside), and reduce the fast healing somewhat.

Okay, here's v2, reduced to 30 HD, with all appropriate changes... I also dropped its con by 6. How's this look? Does this drop it down to CR 22?

That look like it could challenge but not kill your party. Nice :)

Well, my party is a lot less buff since the tpk that cost them all their items and one of the highest-level pcs... I put a 'ceiling' of 18th level on starting new pcs except in the most unusual circumstances- there just aren't a bunch more super-high-level guys out there! :)

Hopefully this will help them earn some new xps and new levels.... ;)

Okay, we played tonight and I ran this encounter... it was great! There's nothing like watching the epic cleric scream, "IT'LL TASTE REALLY GOOD!!" to encourage the halfling to stay in close so he can keep up the flurry of sneak attacks! :D

The revised version, given tonight's experience, I'd put at CR 23. Excellent game, a battle worth staying at it til 2 in the morning for.
