Let Alex Proyas take a shot at it (Dark City, The Crow). He's got vision. And I agree on M. Night. That man can direct.

I also see a problem with the running time of the film. 150 minutes probably wouldn't be enough. It would have to tip 180 minutes unless a larger amount of material than would already have to be cut was removed.

I also think it would work best as a TV miniseries like what they did with The Stand.

No way dude... those are both really average films.
In your opinion, sure. Many consider Dark City to be one of the best science fiction films in the last 20 years. The Crow wasn't great, but it was a good film. Dark City is a totally different story.

I liked the Crow, it had the perfect "world of darkness" feel to it. I still have to see Dark City, but heard nothing but good things about it.
Back on topic, IMO option, you need a mini series to do Watchmen right, a cable station like HBO would be good, it can be done, but you need the right people. DON"T CHANGE ANYTHING.

Really? got any links to reviews?
Rottentomatoes is okay, but I don't trust them for everything as most of those critics know next to nothing. Anyway, I digress to Ebert's review and also would like to mention that he loved it so much that he recorded a commentary track for the DVD.

Edit: VB beat me to it. :)

To add since I am editing -

I agree that they shouldn't make many changes to it if it was to be done as a mini or on HBO or where ever. But there are sure to be changes no matter who adapts it. For example: Keeping the pirate story as a part of it would be very difficult to do as it really needs the comic to run concurrent to the main story.

I just understand any studio wanting to make "Watchmen". It's a great comic series, but it's not very mainstream. It doesn't contain the action that many would think of with a comic book. Who do they market this to? Who would be interested outside of fans of the original series? It just doesn't make sense to make "Watchmen" without radical changes.

That said, my fantasy casting would probably go like this:

Ozymandias - Brad Pitt
Dr. Manhattan - Jim Cazaviel (coupled with some CGI effects)
Nite Owl - Edward Norton
Rorschach - Tim Roth
The Comedian - Harvey Keitel

Makeup helps everyone fit into their younger/older roles.
