The Wilderlands boxed set. It's just amazing.

I've been interested in this campaign setting for a while as a setting for Iron Heroes. I already have CSIO, PGtW and Rappan Athuk, and I think that with this set, it will form the basis for many fun campaigns to follow.

Anyone have any experience with using Iron Heroes or a similar low-magic ruleset with this campaign setting? Any thoughts on how well it will work? It looks like a perfect fit to me...

Why is there such a mishmash of old Earth gods mingled together in this setting? I think the entire Dieties & Demigods is in it. Is this Earth in the future or something?

Basically it's because the Wilderlands is a true "old school" style setting, in which anything, including the kitchen sink, is included simply because it's fun.

The Wilderlands is perfect for a low-magic style campaign. A lot of the areas (at least the ones I've read thus far) have a lot of animals, dinosaurs, or giant insects. It talks a little up front about using more than just standard D&D monsters. I did come across a CR 24 area when flipping through, so there are certainly some really high level areas (anyone know what/where the highest CR one is?), but for the most part, it's EL 10 stuff and below, and a lot of it is just mundane stuff like giant frogs, or giant insects, or dinosaurs, or bugbears, or cities of orcs, or kobolds, things like that.

damn, I want this - and now I'm also really tempted to

a) use the backstory and history as it is given

*and*

b) then place the planet in the far outer rim of the Dragonstar setting... ;)
