The Wilderlands boxed set. It's just amazing.

The Wilderlands

I have been running adventures in the wilderlands since the first edition of D&D and I have been looking forward to this product since I first heard of it 2 years ago. As soon as I can I will buy it. I even tried to get my friends to go to GENCON for 1 day so I could buy this. Alas it was atleast 10 hours away and no one wanted to go for 1 thing. As soon as I get it they will get the chance to understand the joy that is The Wilderlands of High Fantasy.

Amazon etc.

I would not completely count on Amazon orders. This was a strictly limited print run due to the (huge) production costs. It has sold very, very well, and will not even be out for another week or so. Amazon will likely get a few, but I bet those will go fast, and they might run out before they fill all their orders. The WW website or your FLGS is much more likely to get them in stock. We expected a good response, but this has been far more than we thought, and a reprint is unlikely (Morrus, sorry for the post here, but somebody asked about Amazon).

Well, its great that it is so popular, and hopefully I'll be able to get one as it seems freaking awsome. Don't forget to grab some and same them for the ENnies.

Well, with our production costs, we'd prefer to sell them out. Based on pre-orders we aren't sold out, but we are hoping that changes. If that happens we can probably submit the electronic version or something like that.

When you see the boxed set, you'll know we spared no expense. It is a truly fantastic item. I am, of course, somewhat biased ...

Amazon Orders

We let WW take care of distribution. We honestly don't know what the status of the Amazon orders might be. Clark as said that the Boxed Set is not going through the "book trade" because we simply can't risk the return of damaged boxes.

An advance order through your FLGS, an online GS, or WW are your most sure bets. We honestly don't care where you order it (as long as you order it! While you're at it, pick up a copy of CSIO too!). We just don't want people getting mad at us because Amazon orders didn't get filled.

So, is this preview indicative of the entire boxset? Seems to be skimpy on some details...Are all the locations detailed like this, or are there some focal areas that have a lot of detail (like a city or nation or something?) I am on the fence, but I can always use some locations...

That skimpyness gives it the versatility that allows it to be used in many different ways by DMs. There is the City State of the Invincible Overlord, that is really detailed. But the idea behind the Wilderlands is that you are given enough to work with but not so much that you you feel you have to rewrite to make it your own, but you don't have to invent everything whole cloth.

Aaron (who is tired of rewriting the realms).

Between this, Blackmoor, and Castle Zagyg, it looks like some old school classics are finding a new audience.

(And then the new Runequest next year ...)

Indeed. Odd that WOTC has left that market to the independent D20 companies, obsession over crunch and Eberron instead . . . their loss, I suppose. Certainly of my gaming $.

Why is there such a mishmash of old Earth gods mingled together in this setting? I think the entire Dieties & Demigods is in it. Is this Earth in the future or something?

It can be, especially if your the DM.

Treebore has the right of it. In fact there is a section that starts off saying you don't have to use it that talks about the backstory to the wilderlands. Basicly, its a sentient planet that manifests itself in the forms of Gods known by the people there. The planet had the ability to open gates to a bunch of worlds so it became a contested territory between two spacefaring civilizations. after lots of fighting the civs figured out other means of transport and so they abandodned the planet. Thus you get any God you can shake a stick at.

However you don't have to follow this. You can make it any way you want. So if you like the Melnibonian or Cthulu Mythos, you can use that. You can take out all the gods and replace them with your own. You can make it earth in the future or a terraformed mars. Whatever you want. Thus you can use whatever gods you want. Even make your own. Nothing will happen in a product with the gods b/c there is no metaplot that you do not provide.

Neat hugh?
