Theme Sorcerers

Oni

First Post
I'm getting ready to start a game this friday, I want to make a sorcerer. I would really like for this sorcerer to have a cohesive over all theme, but I cannot think of exactly what I want to do, I'm having a sort of mental block. I had thought of doing a summoning themed sorcerer, but the more I think about it the less enthused I become. I want something that is going to be useful and contribute to the game (and be entertaining for me to play), but is more than just a grab bag of spells. The party as I understand it is going to have:

1 paladin
1 cleric
1 bard
and then me.

Please help me come up with a good sorcerer theme, and a way to execute it.

Try looking at the Scion Feats in R&R2 Oni. Maybe that will give you idea of what you'd like to use for a "Theme"

Do you use many spells from other sources? Many of the spells in varies books have animal like names and abilities. I think that could be cool, go with an animal theme.

As I understand it I can use spells from whatever supplements I have as long as I get DM approval first. This will be my first time playing with this particular group of people.

If you are in a party with a paladin and a cleric, you could try a sorcerer who believes his powers are a divine gift and then select spells that can be described to reflect that view.

Right well if you want a "MAGIC" man, definately use Bloodline of Power Scion. You gain +2 to all Spellcraft checks and you cast these spell at +1 effective caster level

0. detect magic, prestigidation 1st identify, magic missile, 2 protection from arrows, spectral hand, 3: dispel magic, haste, 4, minor globe of invulnerability, remove resistance* 5th dismissal, teleport 6th: anazyle dweomer, globe of invulnerability, 7th, limited wish, spell turning, 8th, rapid journey*, symbol 9th, Mord's disjunction, wish

That sound interesting enough to you Oni?

Which is why you be thanking ME for giving you more info. :) There's only two other Scion feats anyway. If you want more, you'd have to wait until 2003. I don't think you have that long do you Oni.

First, a big thumbs up for making a sorcerer with a strong idea behind it - having sorcerers who just somehow 'naturally' learned to cast fireball, dimension door, and all the other most powerful and useful spells in the PHB has always grated on me...

One sorcerer I've always wanted to play was a stormcaller - with various weather and air related spells. This way, you can get a good variety of attack, transport and utility spells and still stay within your theme.

Now bear in mind that I haven't got any books here, but a sampling of possible spells (just from the PHB) could include:

(trying to go from lowest to highest level)

Obscuring mist
Shocking grasp
Feather fall
Fog cloud
Whispering wind
Wind wall
Gaseous form
Gust of wind
Lightning bolt
Fly
Sleet storm
Fire shield
Wall of ice
Solid fog
Cone of cold
Mind fog
Control winds
Control weather
Control water
Otilukes freezing sphere
Chain lightning

Maybe also a few sonic spells (for thunder!), shout etc... Not really a dungeon-crawler, but a useful selection. You could also describe more common spells in terms of your theme - telekinesis as a strong, localised wind for instance.

Hope this helps

The holy sorcerer idea could work well. Pick up the sarced spell metamagic feat from DOTF eventually and spells such as prot. evil and disrupt undead.

I'm in a similar situation at the moment with a soon to be new sorcerer, and he is themed into natural spells, curses and runes. So at first level I have chosen obscuring mist and ray of enfeeblement. Not the most powerful combo, but he should develop an interesting flavour as the campaign progressess.

One other thought to, the spell thematics feat could be great to help flavour a sorcerer. :)
