"A DNA test has confirmed what zoologists, big-game hunters and aboriginal trackers in the far northern reaches of Canada have imagined for years: the first documented case of a hybrid grizzly-polar bear in the wild."

edit: be sure to watch for "Hybrids of Horror: Nanulak" soon on SciFi ;) (sponsored by the Toyota Prius, of course)

The news report I saw this morning said polar-grizzly hybrids have been created in zoos.

I just thought it was too bad they shot it. Why were people out hunting bears, either polar or grizzly, anyway?

zoos huh? i guess polar-grizzy hybrids don't happen in nature because those two kinds of bears don't normally meet up. ;)

Their ranges already touch a few areas. As melting ice forces the polar bears a bit more south and warmer climes mean the grizzly will roam a bit further north, look for it to happen more and more.

Because they needed a break from clubbing seals?

I think there is a limited hunting season of them in both the US and Canada. They aren't that rare.

Stephen Colbert freaked out on his show when he heard about this "bear breeding" phenomenon. (For those who don't watch his show, he hates bears for many obscure reasons.)

With good reason; bears are godless killing machines. ;)

This is kinda scary, though. Today we have grizzly-polar hybrids. But before you know it, we'll have to start worrying about...

Manbearpig is a serious threat to our national security. Make light of him at your peril.

Back to topic. I was amazed that a license to shoot polar bear costs like $45,000. You're really, really wanting the trophy at that point.
