D&D General They Should Drop Hexblade as Subclass...

doctorbadwolf

Heretic of The Seventh Circle
And make it a Gish, and then make a Shadow Patron subclass.

Speaking of doing that, a half pact caster should still get 2 slots right? And just get half caster progression for spells known and prepared.

And like...their own list of invocations...and a type of curse that defines each subclass rsther than a Patron.

Thoughts?

Hexblade as a subclass in 5.5e (look its official) is redundant.

5.5e's Pact of the Blade does the major aspect of the subclass and the Hex big enough to really matter.

To me, 3e's hexblade and duskblade, and 4e's swordmage should be subclasses of some arcane warrior class. But its too late for that.

But if we keep it, I would go harder on the sword being the patron and make it a sentient magic item that talks to you and is right there. Warlock doesnt really need more power in the gish department.

Exact opposite of what I would want. get rid of the idea of the sentient weapon, keep the special curse and raising a shadow being from a dead enemy, and expand from there with specific Shadowfell (not undead) flavor.

Name it Shadow and describe some shadowfell beings that could be patrons.

Then use Hexblade as a subclass of Swordmage, or as its own gish class name.

Not opposed to a Shadow patrons but with 2 Undeath patrons, its not a priority to me.

Magic Sword Patron IMHO has more you can do with it when detected from Gishing and Hexing.

Especially with the shadowfell being so unexplored outside of undead.

THEY ARE SEPARATE THINGS.

UM...how??
Your patron is a talking sword. That is extremely narrow and fairly shallow.

It....isn't, though.

Between the domains of dread, Shadar-kai, and the huge amount of lore to pull from in 4e books, it is a deep well of lore.

And just talking basic concepts without further context, "Shadow" is vastly deeper and more interesting than "Evil Sword (but you don't weild it)"

I know that.
WOTC barely does nonundead Shadowfell stuff.

Evil magic sword.
Focus on the magic item part. Its an evil magic item that you can relocate onto other magic swords.

Or in other terms. Go from Gish Patron to Artificer Patron. Its a living hex that wants to land on and corrupt stronger and stronger powerful magic swords until it can corrupt or become an artifact.

Imagine creating minor magic swords or imbuing magic item features on swords. Killing stuff to put charges on magic swords. Summoning magic armors. Etc.

NFN, I dont trust WOTC with a Shadow pact.
