Thief tricks movement

Many of the rogue tricks in HotFL allow the thief to move up to his speed. Is it possible for the character shift one square instead of walking? Could he run or crawl?

I guess not, because it says he may "move" his speed. Moving is different to shifting. It also is not a "move action" but a "move", so you can only use it in the specified way, which is moving your speed and do nothing else. Running should not be possible since it is a specific action in 4e. Crawling should work, I guess, because it should be move and specific different action. but I guess when crawling each square of movement costs 2 squares of your speed as if moving through difficult terrain.

I agree with the above.

I don't see any feats that let you convert a move to a shift, but maybe Dragon has one. There are a couple of feats that allow you to modify exactly what you do with a shift.

Risky Shift (MP2) lets you shift an extra square, but you grant Combat Advantage for a turn. Long Step (PHB3, Epic) and Mark of Passage (Eberron) let you shift an extra square with no penalties. Low Crawl (PHB3) lets you shift while prone. All of those should be stackable.

You should be able to apply any of those benefits to shifts granted by tricks, and in the case of Escape Artist's Trick, you should be able to apply it to both parts.

Sadly, Reckless Scramble (MP) is only available to Artful Dodgers. It says "When a power lets you shift, you can instead choose to move that distance + 2 squares." Versatile Rogue (MP2, Epic) lets you take an extra Rogue Tactic, but so far as I can tell, none of the features of the Thief build are considered a Rogue Tactic, so there is no way to use it to cross over to pick up something like Reckless Scramble.

Moving a specific number of squares is just that. You move a number of squares. There is no action called 'move.'

You cannot use a trick to crawl, run, walk, shift, or any other move action. You can only do exactly what it says.

Also, crawling is not 'costing you double movement' or anything silly like that. It is an action that you can only take while prone that allows you to move half your speed.
