Thieves Guilds

thieves guilds have to have either.

1. lots of political pull
or
2. lots of magic

they can't stand against any organized government if they dont. One of my pet peeves with most thieves guilds... :)

Does anyone use Gygax's The Canting Crew for criminal-underworld building? I know this book hasn't been rated to highly (I don't have it) but it was designed specifically for this purpose.

One other point to remember when creating a Thieves' Guild. The person (or persons) behind the guild aren't always rogues. Nor are they always of the "usual" races. A former DM of mine had a guild run by a beholder. Another guild I've seen was controlled by a triumverate of politicians.

one of my pet peeves is people who think that monolithic government and police forces like we have today existed in medieval europe...

maybe they just pick on people with neither of the above power sources? without political power, no ones going to care.

theives guilds

I too use the exotic behind the scenes races. in my current SL game the head of the Melaid thieves guild is a titanspawn (fatling) who is simply known as"The Fat Man". he REALLY freeked out the PC rogue who was sent there to deliver a message to him
from the Llangwyr thieves guild
