[Thieves' World] Murder at the Vulgar Unicorn

"Let's just walk in like we have business here..." Kadramis suggests, placing one hand on his sword hilt and the other on the door, trying to push it open.

As Kadramis and Derleth try entering the front of the warehouse Carvar watches the back entrance alert for and signs of trouble.

Daeric joins Carver in keeping an eye on the back courtyard.

"Doesn't appear to be much traffic around here. Should we hold position, or should we take advantage of the lack of activity to see if the back entrance is passable? If the others find trouble, we're going to need to get in there quickly provided they can make enough noise for us to hear."

“We could always check to see if the door is locked.” Carvar responds to Dearic’s question. “Otherwise we would need to bust our way in if there’s trouble. There’s not much going on around here so I hope we could hear our companions if they yell out for help.”

Kadramis and Derleth stand outside the front door to the warehouse, preparing to enter. Nearby, an old man shuffles along The Wideway heading east, back hunched and head hung to keep the bright sun from his eyes. He is the first pedestrian to be spotted in the area since the group arrived.

Kadramis pushes on the door but it doesn't budge. This door quite obviously is locked. When the door doesn't swing open, Derleth glances down and sees the visible lock. From the looks of it, it's of average construction.

Meanwhile around the back of the warehouse, Carvar, Cira and Daeric keep an eye out for any signs of trouble. Carvar slips along the back wall, over to the large doors and tries them to see if they're locked. They don't budge. There is no obvious locking mechanism so they are either barred or locked from inside.

Back around the front, Derleth manages to pick the lock. Kadramis pushes the door open and steps just inside the door, followed closely by Derleth. The building is mostly empty, obviously not being used for what it was originally intended at the moment. Across the room about forty feet away, a woman sits in a chair bound and gagged. Kadramis recognizes her as the woman, Rossa, who had been in the Vulgar Unicorn the previous night when the murder took place. Standing to her right, and slightly behind her is a man who fits the description of Pace, who was also at the Unicorn the previous night. Pace is obviously a Wrigglie and is armed. A shortsword hangs at his side and a light crossbow hangs from his back.

OOC: I figured I'd save a bit of time by having Derleth pick the lock as I figured that was what he would want to do ultimately. I apologize if that was an incorrect assumption.

OOC: No problem Toric, you had Derleth do exactly what I was going to have him do anyway which was pick the lock and go inside.
I guess Pace can see us coming in the room, so much for the element of surprise then.

If Pace can see us then Derleth will level his light crossbow, that he loaded and cocked before they went inside the warehouse, at Pace.

"Step away from the woman, Pace and set down your weapons on the floor. We are here by the authority of the Magistrate to question you about the events at The Vulgar Unicorn last night." he says to him in Sanctan.

Kadramis follows Derleth, a look of grim determination on his face. He grips the hilt of his bastard sword tightly, but does not draw it yet... He'll glance quickly around the area for any other possible foes.

Daeric watches Carvar check the back doors, noting Carvar's lack of success at trying to open them.

"This is not good. We can't see what's going on in there, and if they call for help, we can't enter. All we can do is watch a locked entryway. We need to maintain the watch, but we also need to find another way in if we are needed.
"I think I'm going to check to see if the window in the alley is openable or not. You should stay at a point where you can see both directions."

Daeric carefully moves back down the alley to check the window. He will remain cautious and strive to keep from showing any part of himself in the window.

Pace laughs at Derleth, making no move to put his weapons down. "Events at the Vulgar Unicorn do not concern me. She does," he says, hooking a thumb towards Rossa. "But she is only a job, after all. Nothing to get so worked up about. Now, why don't you lower that crossbow, or for that matter get out of here and mind your own business."

Before Derleth or Kadramis can respond, an inhuman scream pierces the air, and a powerful, shaggy form swings down from the rafters of the building. It appears to be a pot-bellied monkey or misshapen ape, but clearly isn't natural in origin. The creature stands as tall as a man, but has arms longer than it is tall. Its body is covered in blood-red hair and its teeth are jet black. Its arms end in long clear talons that look like glass. The creature moves with surprising speed for its size, and rushes toward Pace and Rossa with a fierce growl.

Behind the warehouse, the piercing scream of the creature echoes through the alley, alerting Carvar, Cira and Daeric that something is amiss inside the building.
