Things I've learned from Gaming.

The man with the probe
I was just going over one of the PbP games I'm in, and strangely, we had the subject of wine come up, and I ended up learning a bit about them. And it got me thinging, what else have I learned while gaming?

I'm not talking little lessons like "play nice" or "work with others" or even "don't LARP drunk", but things that are seemingly unrelated like things about wine, or perhaps building construction, cars, or other odd tidbits of knowledge.

So please, share what you've learned while gaming.

I've never been in the military. Just about anything I know about military equipment, procedures, ranks, etc. has been from gaming.

Same with anything medieval. Weapons, terminology, way of life, etc. I doubt I'd ever have much interest in it if not for gaming.

Never split the party. :)

If I ever get into a threatening situation, I just imagine myself as a 1st level commoner with 1 HP, then think tactically from there. :)

As a DM, I've learned a lot about social, political, and economic theory by implementing different systems of each in my games. Also picked up some historical knowledge when I borrow historical events/situations and adapt them to D&D. Just thinking about how different societal systems are structued and how they interact in-game (and also how they have "performed" in real life) is very informative.

  • If I get shot in the face, I can walk away with nothing but a scratch provided that I'm a generally healthy person to begin with. (d20)

  • The more horribly flawed or disabled I am, the more really cool benefits life showers me with! (GURPS 3e)

  • People with prosthetic limbs are turning into zombies. (Shadowrun)

  • Rain and spray from a water gun both constitute 'running water' (Rifts: Vampire Kingdoms)

  • A common squirrel can tear out a grown man's throat in less than ten seconds. (Rolemaster)

  • Acting amoral will drive you completely insane. (new World of Darkness)

  • Jesus was an ET. (Dread)

Take all of these with a huge smiley ;)

They're nothing compared to the imaginary, invisible, turtles - those little fellas will break your neck.
