Things the Report button is NOT for

Most of what I report falls under the broad category of 'this looks like it is about to culminate in a fight' -- not necessarily be the instigation, but the point where things look to start spiraling out of control. I feel that's when myself commenting instead of (or in supplement to) reporting is most likely less helpful. Hopefully this is the right time to do so, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
The small handful of times I have used the report button has been for something along these lines. A poster or group of posters started getting a bit heated in a thread that is very fast pace and with a lot of passionate debate/discussion happening. This can make it easier to get riled up when one is also wanting to keep up with the discussion and not taking the time to slow down and calm down. I don’t want to get anyone in trouble for getting a bit carried away, but at that point I felt that using the report button to say something like “hey, I don’t think the poster and/or the ones they are replying to haven’t quite done anything truly against the rules yet, but things are starting to get rather heated and I think something should be said before someone crossed a line they probably don’t want to cross in the heat of the moment.”

So, here's a thing many people don't seem to get: A bit of red text isn't a huge deal.

Yes, a moderator told you (generic, not you, RoughCoronet) to knock off whatever it was you were doing. But if you do knock it off... that's it. It's done. If you aren't making a habit of it, and aren't far over the line, that's pretty much the end of it, as far as we are concerned.

A very long time ago, back in grade school, I learned (kinda the hard way) to fight my own battles rather than go squealing to the teacher.

And that's still how I roll. The only thing I'll report here is spam.

Yeah, but Lanefan, and this is pretty important - you aren't in grade school anymore.

We expect folks to have outgrown schoolyard solutions by the time they get here.

Got it. Schoolyard games are strongly encouraged, but they cannot have schoolyard solutions.

Oh, boy, think I might have to "house rule" this one.
