Yeah I stopped back in 2009 after it went free to play. I haven't played any MMOs since.
I played the Star Wars MMO, WoW, D&D but track record is not good with them, I usually bail within two-three weeks. I seem to vaguely remember the DDO servers having problems or the game needing a patch when it first released. I didn't play it for too long, but I was working a lot of OT at the time and going to night classes, so it was either drinking or DDO in my free time, guess which one I chose

I did DDO and Eve online from 2005-2010 roughly. The games were fine, but what kept me around was the folks I played with. They served as a stop gap for me while I had no TTRPG going on. I was also in school and working so I had little time to waste playing them, but like you, found the time anyway. Funny, now I have plenty of time but no desire to go back. I prefer scraping together TTRPG both in person and online.

Even EverQuest 1 is still limping along and putting out new expansions, all with extremely dated graphics and an interface that its devoted fans aren't bothered by.

Which is awesome for them, honestly. My old EQ1 guild is still chugging along, 20 years after I left it, providing a community for a group of friends who've been together almost 25 years now.

Me and a friend wanted to play DDO together online but pretty sure we couldn't get on the same server, or we kept getting kicked off randomly. IDR, but it just hit me that was almost 20 years ago. I bought a Switch a few years back played it for a while, but I haven't touched it a long time. My attention span is shot nowadays
