This bard thinks he has the X factor

I think it's perfectly plausible. Someone has to be Fat Domino, it might as well be him. With all the various magical sound and light effects, it's likely there's a lot more 'SFX' going on than people probably think.

Hey, it's really cool to see someone getting into his character instead of just treating a bard as a lame laughingstock. (Rich Burlew has a lot to answer for :D )

My first thought was Pratchett's "music with rocks in it" as well!

Of course, now that I've seen the rapping samurai in Samurai Champloo...

I want to make a "performance art" bard who dresses all in black and does incomprehensible performances instead of singing, like eating a fur coat while smearing paint on his body while standing in a bucket of applesauce.

I have a gnome bard that is playing as if his family were chiminy sweeps. His shoulders became too big to fit down so he had to find something else to do.

He does not play music but does poetry.

But the kicker is that he plays as if he has a heavy accent (like british.. cockney(sic?). Most of what he says is mumbo-jumbo but you can kind of make out what he is talking about. He does not fake the accent but just throws in silly words.

Diddo on Soul Music...

Yes, ive read soul music, as has the player. Im a fan of pratchets books.

But its not realy meant to be a un-serious campain, Im going to have to be careful not to spoil the feel of the rest of the game, and main plot. But I think they can join well enough; eg- just as everything going well, the crowd lets out a different kind of scream. Maybe they get more bad atention than dodgering elders and wary fathers. The nearby red dragon (who they dont know of yet) could make an apearence, he cant belive his luck when he find hundreds of snackys all lit up jumping and shouting :] .

Ive got plently of time to plan it all.

Will the "+5 guitar" actually give him +5 on his Perform roll? Just out of curiosity, what are you charging him for that?

Thats the bit im not so sure about, skill check bonuses aren't realy worth the same as attack and damage bonuses, so pricing it the same wouldn't be right. also with that method a +1 would be the same as a master work but cost five times more so that doesn't seem right. Someone here must sure have done something sameish with instruments.

There are items in the core rules that give bonuses to skills (rings of jumping and swimming leap to mind). You could use them as a guide. Remember to charge extra for the fact that the item doesn't take up a body slot.

Pricing magic items is a pretty arcane art in itself, so good luck to you. ;)
