Roman Opalka did something similar. He started in 1965 by painting numbers on a canvas (from 1 and onward, until he filled the canvas) and took a picture. The next day, he continues his serie and takes another picture when the canvas is full of numbers. He's been doing this for 41 years, it seems...

I'm sure there's a wikipedia article on him, but I just can't seem to get to the site as of now...
