This keeps happening, why? No, really... why?

Other themes that just keep popping up:
- Playable Kobolds (stronger ones, in other words)
- Playable Aristocrats / Nobles
- House Paladins
- House Sorcerers

I'd say there were more Sorcerer variants on this form than Elf subraces... :)

Speaking of Elves and Cat people, I remember reading a description of elves in one of those many Elf books (I think it may have been the one put out by EN publishing) in which elves basically WERE cat people! They had evolved from feline progenitors. Their long pointy ears moved like a cat’s does in reaction to sound, and they had a propensity for climbing trees. At the time I thought it was hilarious but interesting at the same time. I decided that if I ever built my own campaign world, those were the type of elves that would populate it.

A dwarf/roper? What the heck!? I know that dwarves love stone and all, but gee wiz!

I don't know. Cat people have never been used or seen in any d&d game I've ever played in. The half dragon in the MM has always been good enough for us. And most of the time only standard PHB elves are allowed. Though I have seen drow and 1 fire elf and a few half elves (unearthed arcana) appear in games as PCs/NPCs.

Since for the people I play with this isn't an issue I don't have any good insight to give regarding the situation. Just stating that I haven't noticed it outside of source books and the internet.

Well then, here's another question for those who feel like answering:

If you WERE to create a "new" race, and it wasn't going to be a "cat man", "alt.elf", or "Half-Drac", then just what WOULD you create? A "Lemur Man", "Stone Dwaf", "Half-Basilisk"?

I like the Dracotaur amongst the newest monster races to come out and have adopted it imc

I use goblisn as a PC race but generally agree that there are already enough races out there without creating another. That said I did adapt the halfling to generate a 'Faun', I think gnomes should be 15 inches tall (max) and I'm finndling around with stats to generate a race based on this:

(ps its a microraptor - the smallest known theropod)

oh and is trying to make a Willowisp into a playable PC the same thing?

1) Cat people
2) Elven subtype

I'll take a shot at these two.

Two main candidates for anthromophization are dogs and cats. Gnolls can generally serve as the dog people race. But there isn't really a cat people race. Without "an official version", everyone feels free to make their own.

Elven subtypes is historical result from 1E Monster Manual, with subspecies derived from Tolkien, (Although Gygax has often said that Tolkien was not the inspiration for D&D, he has admitted that he introduced certain elements in order to attract people who do like Tolkien.) The elves are a pretty clear example, with the high, grey and wood elves having antecedents in the elves of Lorien, Rivendell and Great Forest. And drow being added later as villians in G3.
