This legal by RAW?

Out group has a new players which is cause trouble with other players (Including myself), In a 5th level campaign he is playing a silver scale gnome illusionist with a dire owl mount and a psudeo-dragon familiar. I question if he his following the rules on this.

1) Does being a silver scale dragon have a level adjustment and or racial hid dice so he is not a 5th level sorc?

2) His claim is that he can have a dire owl as a mount just by buying one and not having to take a feat, is there any truth to that?

3) His big attack is 'phastial killer' (I don't know the name of the spell of hand, but it does ability score damage) which is delivered through a bite of his psudeo-dragon pet.

Thanks for the help.

Where the F&^$ does one buy a dire owl? I mean it's not like your typical horse seller has dire owls just perched around... Or like you can just walk into a town to pick up a dire anything!

I honestly don't know if there are any special rules for alternate mounts ... especially not owls... still, if I were a DM, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that you SOMEHOW managed to cajole a giant flying beast from the nether realms to be your mount.

Sadly, I am not the dm. The guy who is dming has only been playing for less then a year, and started off in my Ravenloft campaign. Other players, lead by my self are urging him to not allow him to play, because he has been known in other campaigns to break rules that dms would not know about. That is why I am asking the legality of the character.

Well, a couple things. You can get a pseudo-dragon familiar, but you have to be level 7 to qualify (and NG alignment). So he could use a feat (Imp. Familiar from the DMG) at level 9 to get the familiar assuming he's straight classed.

I'm not familiar with that spell. There's phantasmal killer, but that's 4th level and doesn't do ability score dmg (it's save (x2) or die). The only other illusion spell that I know does ability score dmg is phantasmal assailants, but doesn't require a touch at all so I don't know why he'd need his familiar to deliver it. Otherwise, I am not familiar with the spell.

And the dire owl...yeah...that's a DM's fiat there. I assume he's got the ranks in Ride required to ride the darn thing. If it's a big problem, there's always those owl-hungry wyverns that patrol the skies.

Hm.

1) Does being a silver scale dragon have a level adjustment and or racial hid dice so he is not a 5th level sorc?
Hmm. I'd say there has to be a LA to that. I mean, being a dragon and not having any LA? Hmm.

2) His claim is that he can have a dire owl as a mount just by buying one and not having to take a feat, is there any truth to that?
Well, you COULD probably buy a dire owl, but having it as a mount? I'd like to know which kind of training he's been through which allows him to do so (Without feats)
I'd say you have to take a feat. Like the feats for gaining odd familiars (I can't remember the name), or the feat for gaining special mounts (Paladin feat)

3) His big attack is 'phastial killer' (I don't know the name of the spell of hand, but it does ability score damage) which is delivered through a bite of his psudeo-dragon pet.
The pseudodragon does not have this spell (So it's channeled through it). And "phastial killer" I don't know. "Phantasmal Killer" (Sor/Wiz 4) is in the PHB though.

its 5000 gold to get a giant owl. It says so in the description. I don't see why thats a problem. Im sure this guy is breaking rules else ware though. did he pay 5000 for the owl?

Not sure where you got this from, it's probably correct.
Although, according to the Tome and Blood 3.0 book, you can chose a familiar with an alignment up to one step away on each axes. (The pseudo is NG)
And he could take the feat as 6th level, and chose to gain the familiar at 7th.
:D

Oh and. According to "Defenders of Faith" (Another 3.0) a paladin can get special mounts from level 5. (The first "Dire" here is Dire Wolf, at 6th. The first owl is "Giant owl" 7th level)

couldent find any info about this silver scale dragon thing. You can get dragon type without any LA simply by paying 300 gold and or something and becoming a behamit thing from races of the dragon

I think the giant owl is the very least of whats wrong here.

Also, during the game he summoned 6 feindish apes and a aspect of bahument (Good dragon god, can't spell his name) Is that possible for a 5th level sorc to do?

Hi Rusty, yep, 7th level for pseudo-dragon as others have said. It's in the DM's Guide.

1. The level adjustment for a half-dragon is +3 as per the MM, page 146.

EDIT: I'm assuming he's a half-dragon as you also said he's a gnome.

2. I guess you could buy a trained one. Not sure what the starting gold for a 5th level character is, but he may have bought a trained one.

3. I don't recognize the spell either.

The character sounds broken.

Thanks,
Rich
