D&D 5E Thought exercise: homage to past editions

After reading the basic rules, I found a lot to love and many echoes of older editions. It inspired me to write this list. Complete your own! And keep it positive, please.

The new edition is like:

  • BCEMI because you can make a character in 5 minutes and start playing in 10 minutes.
  • AD&D because magic items break assumptions about PC power.
  • 2E because you choose a fluff/crunch package to customize your PC at 1st level.
  • 3E because rogue sneak attacks are a thing to be feared
  • 4E because full spellcasters can rely on their magic

I like the spirit of your post!

5E is like 4E because you can be effective in any race/class combination.
5E is like 3E because it promises to bring everyone together under a smoother system.
5E is like 2E because the game evokes images of all the classic campaign worlds (even the ones I find boring or ridiculous, whether I want it to or not).
5E is like 1E because everything in the game feels like it's dripping with inspiration for adventure.
5E is like Basic because other people said so. I've never played Basic.
