Thoughts On Level Limits?

Hi, Shark!

I see a number of solutions, but I'll go ahead and give you ours.

We play BECMI out of the Mentzer booklets, but we use some of the rules from the RC as well. We use the optional unlimited demi-humans rule, which is pretty nice. They go up, but slowly at high levels. This isn't a big deal, because you don't get as much for levels higher up, anyway. We ditch the "Elf uses Cleric attack tables" in this scenario, though.

In AD&D or any of the OSR rules for splitting class and race, we do what one of the previous posters mentioned: halving XP rates once the limit is reached.

To mitigate potential imbalances, we let humans have an extra skill to start and a 10% XP bonus.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but it suits our needs quite well.

Let us know what you decide!

I don't mind level limits, and used them when I was running AD&D 1e. Because of the general levels our games ran to, it was never a problem.

With RCFG, I chose to avoid level limits altogether, and instead imposed class limits. This was an attempt to specify a given "feel" to various demihumans based upon the choices available. I like that paladins must be human, for example.

Even so, I included a sidebar about removing those limitations, because I know that they are not universally loved.

The easiest solution is, if you don't want to use them, don't. But give your human characters some sort of a compensating edge if you want any human PCs at all.
