Three new spear-related feats for critique

I've allowed something similar to the second one, only without the penalties applied to opponents, and without any prerequisites. It was originally supposed to start a chain, but I never made any more... I like the first one too, but I'd figure that it would require the second one, not the other way around.

The way I figure it, using the first one, you can shift position with a little difficulty, which translates to once per round. With the second one, you shift position effortlessly and can attack at both distances easily. To balance a 2 feat investment (instead of an EWP with the Spiked Chain), not counting the weapon focus, I decided to give a little bonus. Since combat is rather nebulous anyways, I just envisioned the extra threatened area to put a closing foe momentarily off his balance.

Balanced and flavorful, IMO. :)

Another approach would be to make Reflexive Stance path into Versatile Stance, and to remove the BAB prereq and the penalties to the opponent from Reflexive Stance (i.e., a feat that has WF as a prereq and allows you to use reach weapons against adjacent targets, period).

I too love polearm feats.

I really like your feats, their nice. i might have to introduce them into my game to make the polearms and spears a little more fun. Thanks for the suggestion.

I like 'em. I have a few polearm feats imc already.. I also really like 'em.

POLEARM STYLE (General, Fighter)
You wield a pole arm with professional technique, dispatching foes with your reach.

Benefit: When you wield any pole arm, you gain a +1 style bonus on attack rolls made as attacks of opportunity on creatures moving through your reach.

SLIDING GRIP (General, Fighter)
You are well-trained in the use of a specific pole arm at close range.

Prerequisites: Str 13+, Dex 13+, Weapon Focus (any pole arm)

Benefits: When using a pole arm you have weapon focus in, at the beginning of your turn you may choose to shift your grip to attack and threaten 5’ less than normal for the weapon’s reach.

SLOW & STEADY (General, Fighter)
When using a pole arm, you move deliberately, sacrificing speed for accuracy.

Prerequisite: Weapon Focus (any pole arm)

Benefit: When using a pole arm you have weapon focus in, you may choose to shift your initiative down two, four or six and gain a competence bonus to attack rolls equal to half that (+1, 2 or 3). You cannot shift your initiative below 0 with this feat.

SPINNING HAFT (General)
You can use a long-hafted weapon as a spinning shield against missiles.

Prerequisites: Str 13+, Dex 13+, Sliding Grip, Weapon Focus (longspear, quarterstaff or any pole arm)

Benefit: When taking a total defense action with a pole arm, quarterstaff or longspear, you gain a +3 deflection bonus to your AC vs. missiles.

Here's another feat I'm working on, the idea is you use a polearm (or the threat of one) to push someone around. I imagine this kind of thing for beastmasters and perhaps slavers.

Prod [General, Fighter]
Your threats with a reach weapon cause a foe to retreat.
Requirements: Weapon Focus (any reach weapon), Intimidate 4+ ranks
Benefit: When using a reach weapon, you may make a special Bull Rush attack which does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Instead of moving into the defender's square, the farthest square you threaten is the origin of the attack. In place of your strength bonus, use your Base Attack Bonus for the opposed strength check. Success means that the opponent must either move back per Bull Rush, or suffer an attack to which he is denied his dexterity bonus to AC.

So, how about this one?

Reflexive Stance [General, Fighter]
Benefit: ........ Also, any opponent who passes through your 10' reach to a square you also threaten suffers a -2 to attack rolls and a -2 to AC with respect to your attacks until the beginning of his next turn.

I think these are great ideas! I would reccommned uping tthe prereq's to BAB +3 so low level guys couldn't take them but that's just me.

I do have one question on the above quote though. If someone passes through your threatened zone they are -2 to hit anyone (i imagine because they are avoiding your spear?) and you are +2 to hit them?

Thanks!

On reflection, I'd agree - seem pretty good. Though using the Spiked Chain as a power gauge is probably not the best. Still, compared to a Duom, the feats are fairly good.

In a related note, I'd recommend checking out Master of Arms, by (I think) AEG - I like the book a lot, and it has a number of Weapon Master classes based on polearms - glaives, ranseurs, guisarme, longspears, etc.

Some very flavorful things (though a bit odd), that are entertaining (Spearing someone with a longspear, then leaping over them to a square 10' on the other side is amusing).
