Thri-Kreen question

First Post
Hi everyone, I have been watching the boards for some time, but this is my first post, so be gentle
I played a Trhi-Kreen in dark sun 2nd edition. He was a fighter-psion 8/8 and I intend to play him in 3e, now that it just appear in Monster Manual 2. I know that he will be 10 level using the guidelines in the conversion manual. Of course we use the psionic handbook, so his ecl will be +5 and my DM and I decided he can be a psichic warrior. My question is the following: The monster manual says Thri kreen has several powers at will and several defense/attacks modes. It says that thri kreen gains new attack/defenses modes as if he is a psion with psichometabolism as primary discipline or a psichic warrior. I asume that this powers are added to the attack/defense modes gained by the psichic warrior and I will have as well the powers in the description. Another question: is the poison deliverded by my character more powerful than the standard? The standard dificulty is set by the formula about poison (10+ 1/2 hit dice+ Con modifier), so I think that the DC for my character will be 16 (10 + 1/2 of 7 hit dice+ 3 con modifier). Please tell me if I'm correct about all of this. Thanks !

hey wujenta! welcome!

i don't have the MMII, so i'd need to know what the Thri-Kreen's entry says about advancement. if it says 'advancement: by character class', then you're right. a creature who gains a class, benefits from all of that classes abilities and doesn't lose any of their own 'natural' abilities

the poison: again, if you can advance by class, the creature's poison save would be affected (just like it would for higher or lower ability scores). an example: a medusa (who does advance by class) with a high charisma and a few levels in sorcerer would have her gaze DC raised significantly (ouch!:D )

As per MM II
The poison is set as a base of DC 11.nothing is mentioned about an increase on the page. initial and secondary damage is paralysis. damage is 2d6 and can be done once per day(all the posion the thrikreen can create)

Preferred class is ranger(non psionic)
If you are a non psionic your ECL is +3 plus the level so a ranger thrikeen is ECL 4. For a psionic it is level +5. For a psionic thri kreen's favoured class is Psychic Warrior though a few choose monk or Psion with the primary discipline of psychometabolism

The gaining of new combat modes is an error. You only gain them if you take levels in psion or psychic warrior.

The MM2 version has only 2 HD, fewer feats, and is ECL +3 (non-psioni) or ECL +5 (with the same psionic abilities as in the PsiH supplement). You can only gain class levels; you can't gain kreen monster Hit Dice.

If you look at the Psionics Handbook Web Enhancement from WoC on page 9, they give a sample Thri-Kreen. Unfortunately, the people that made MM2 decided either to ignore or not look at this previous Thri-Kreen conversion. The two differ quite a bit, from the poison save all the way to the actual stats.

The save DC is as follows: 10 + 1/2 HD + Con modifier.
For a 2 HD kreen with a Con of 11, the save DC is 11.
There's a very good reason why they say nothing about an increase: all poison DCs follow that formula (vermin get bonuses on top of that). If a viper advanced in Hit Dice (or somehow gained class levels), then the save DC of its poison increases. See the Monster Manual and MM2 for details on this kind of thing - even the SRD says it.

It was reportedly deliberate - they wanted to make a thri-kreen that was actually playable as a PC at a reasonable level.
