Thumbs Down to 3.5 Edition

Heh heh. Counters could work, or use a drawn-out map on a piece of paper, or battlemat (I have one, despite the lack of counter - marker makes for a good mini) and so forth.

I use colored chips, usually (also, coins work brilliantly). PC's are marked with pieces of masking tape on the chips.

It's funny. I've TRIED using illustrated counters and actual miniatures, but my players won't have it! They say it ruins their imagination. They much prefer just seeing the "red chip" and imagining the way the ogre looks.

Wait.... all of this bickering boils down to one statment is that what you all are saying?

The statment is:: "Play the game how your happy with the game. Use whatever makes your group happy, be it mini's or not."

PS where is this mini-mania coming from? I'm terrible at math and yet I can turn 1 square into 5 feet pretty quickly.
Actually, what most amuses me is when a 1E fan starts complaining about this. In 1E, everything; movement, spell ranges and area of effects, etc. was listed in inches. Why? Because the Chainmail wargame used a scale of 1" = 10'.

At worst, the grid thing is no worse than 1E. At best, it's a return to "the old way".

At least "1 square" is obviously a scale measurement. I don't remember what spell it was (passwall, maybe), but I can distinctly remember wondering what on earth the point of it only penetrating 1 inch was. Then I realized that it was on a scale.

Boiling it down to that level of discussion kinda invalidates the whole idea of dedicating a message board to D&D discussion.

Pretty sure that once in comabt they suddenly shortened to 10 secord rounds with turns lasting 1 minute.

Actually, it was 10 segments (6 seconds) = 1 round (or minute) and 10 rounds = 1 turn (10 minutes).

Combat remained in rounds, and segments only applied if you used individual weapons speed and casting times.

IIRC, this was changed somewhat in Combat & Tactics.

I always thought the point of these boards was to discuss new monster ideas trade pc plot hooks and other such fun things. Not whine and cry about needing new weapon charts, corrected size templates for this or that. This whole thread was started because like all other things he did not put the effort into trying 3.5 or even giving it its fair chance. Heck, I would have not been playing these games if it was not for someone giving me a D&D boxed adventure set when I was 12. I at first thought it was just something really stupid and put it under my bed and forgot about it for nearly a year and one day I opened it up and started to read the books that came with it and thought it would be fun to play. Been playing D&D and other wargames since.

While I can't stand what they keep doing to the Warhammer universe I don't sit on my little throne and berrat GW for what they are doing I decided to not play their games. There are plenty of other options out there for someone to pick up. There are TONS of other roleplaying games to play. Noone is forcing anyone to play this game or that under penlty of death. Its just that simple. Whining on a forum about what you can't stand in this edition is fine and dandy but it won't solve the problems of the book. Only the DM and his players can fix what they feel is wrong. This is not the dang RPGA for crying out loud.

That's how it was in 1e. 2e didn't have any units shorter than rounds (1 minute) - the old weapon speeds and spell casting times were turned into initiative modifiers instead. That didn't stop some spells from non-core books from referring to segments - I know there was a spell named "Wall of Ash" or something like that in Dark Sun that mentioned segments.

Combat & Tactics shortened the round to ~12 seconds (the books says 10-15, with five rounds to a minute).
