D&D 5E Tiefling sub race and variants

I’m pretty sure the intention of the question is to gauge whether the wording of the options, or any rule elsewhere, precludes what they’re asking.

I mean... You might as well ask whether there are any rules preventing you from combining the SCAG variant half-elf rules with your own homebrew half-drow subrace. The answer is, the subraces in question don't exist in the rules of D&D 5th edition. There are no rules allowing or disallowing it. If you want to use them together, knock yourself out. If you don't want to allow it, that's also legit.

yes!!! thats my question, thank you bro

Yeah, so, taking the rules as written, including UA, the two combine just fine. As long as your DM/group has no problem with it, as written, the variant and subrace teiflings don’t interfere, and if they were published as written in UA, would require a specific clause explicitly saying they can’t be combined in order to prevent it.

In other words, if you’re allowing both options, and taking them at face value, you can combine them.

The two aren’t related.

Sure they are. Both questions ask how an official rule that modifies race features (SCAG tiefling variants and SCAG half-elf variants) interacts with an unofficial subrace for the same race (UA tiefling subraces and homebrew half-elf subraces). The answer, in both cases is “however you want them to.”

thats cool man, not a big fan of homebrew but i like your ideas, tieflings is a really underrated concept.

Then why are you worried about UA?

They tell you up front that UA stuff is varying degrees of rough ideas, unfinished stuff, might not be balanced, & might be things they want some feedback on, ask your DM, etc.
5e UA is essentially homebrew - the only differences? A) Who's making it, B) that most of it's lesser quality than what you'll find digging through these forums....

They are different cases. UA is playtest material, not someone’s personal home-brew. Most of it has had a round of alpha level play testing before it is put out, and is written by the people who wrote the official rules.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t see the difference, btw. OP clearly does, so it is relevant to their questions. The question is pretty simple, as is the answer, which has been given, so I’m pretty much done here.
