Ties in opposed rolls

*shrug*

Maybe a subconscious retention from some strategy games that give the defender the advantage in a tie?

I wouldn't call tie resolution swinging to the one with the most bonuses unfair. If you are better, you have the advantages. In a tie, you leverage those advantages.

I always played it like the defender won. Does anyone know where I read this.
I think you read it in RISK :D

Note that another way to say this is, in the case of a tie, the person who rolled the lower "natural" number on the d20 wins.

That's just a little easier than adding up a bunch of modifiers for the same result.

I'm not sure where I saw it, but for rolls like Spot v. Hide, I remember seeing that the Hide check is the DC for the Spot check, so on a tie, the spotter would win.
I'll look for it.

You know, once you rolled for the opposed check, that adding up would already be done, so unless your memory is reaaaaally short ;), it's not hard to compare those numbers, but comparing the natural roll works equally well, of course.

I give it to the PCs. That's just me.
Did that, too, some time ago... I think it was Shadowrun or Earthdawn, ties (especially initiative) would always go to the PCs. :)

The Tie-Goes-To-The-One-With-The-Higher-Modifier thing applies ONLY to skill checks. It's in the Skill section, and thus only applies to such. In cases like Grapple, Disarm, and Trip, a tie always goes to the defender.

Does it say that somewhere? I couldn't find anything besides the skill opposed check rule.
