Time on the Astral

Ok, I have a problem with the perception of time on the Astral. Time doesn't pass. fine, how does that work on spells with durations? i understand anyspell cast is quickend and all but what about durations? does flame sheild last until you leave the plane? in 1e and 2e this was covered pretty well but there seems to be a gap in the Manual of the Planes.
If time was localized to the traveler in regard to spells he cast why wouldn't that hold true for having to eat/sleep/drink etc.
any ideas? anyone?

thanks

This is pretty complicated, all the more so since I don't have my books with me; but I'll take a stab at it.

The Astral plane is mostly in tune with the mind, and with magic (since you need your mind to manipulate spells (and you don't for spell-like abilities)). In fact, its been more accurately described as a "non-spatial non-plane". Given that, when you go there, your mind continues to function (and in fact, is somewhat heightened since Intelligence replaces Strength and Wisdom replaces Charisma), while the your body is locked into a sort of stasis, having no way to function by itself on the plane (hence why mindless creatures can't move themselves about).

Now, since the body is somewhat "locked out" in this state (I just know I'm explaining this badly) that explains why its biological processes cease to function on the Astral. They're still there, they're just frozen, so when you leave, they catch up with you. You still perceive time as flowing though, and so it does, which is why spell durations remain the same. One round is one round is one round. Period.

Hope that helps (but it probably didn't).
