Time Passes...

See, I wonder because one of the things I always loved about Ars Magica was this sense that really important things (like research) actually take time. Lots of time. And I've always liked it when DMs have inserted that kind of thing into D&D. I wonder if people like crunchy stuff with time requirements attached?

At one point I allowed my party to play their henchmen as PCs for a gametime period of about five years while the PCs were doing ruler-type things the <I>players</I> cared little about (the henchmen, er, cohorts, were doing supporting missions so it all tied in together). It also made for an interesting diversion for about six months.

When the "real" PCs came back into play I had lots of new plot hooks and some time away from that campaign to recharge the creative juices.

But I guess that's not quite what you are talking about... I've gone a couple months at most on what your actual question was about :)
