Tiny Creatures and AOO

Thanks for the info.

I don't think I will give a AOO each time the quasit's attack.

The encounter is from one of the newer free modules I just downloaded. Name escapes me right now. Essentially, there is a conjurer who has summoned a bunch of quasits.

Well, if it's quasits, they get invisibility at will. So they might be using hit-and-run tactics anyway, turning invisible and moving away every other round. No AoO if you don't know to take one, I'd have to say.

Needless to say, these sorts of tactics can drive your players into a frazzle.

THey are quasits but they become visible after they attack.

I see the combat as going invisible quasit attacks, then becomes visible. Once it is visible , to go invisible again it will use a stndard action and invoke a AOO ( for using a spell like ability).

I see them flying away and letting the fast healing kick in every couple of rounds.

You know, I think I based my ruling on entering someone's square as granting an AoO (regardless of movement) based on an argument on here, but from looking at the rules I can't really see any basis for that (other than bullrush, and that could be more about the way you do a bullrush than to do with entering someone's square), so I'll have to take that back about stepping back 5ft as a viable tactic.

Even if they had improved invisibility would they still get an AoO against them? (The quasits that is.) Or, would the attacking party have to succeed in a Listen check before dealing out the AoO? I am so confused.

THe way I play (and this is by no means the right way) I have the PC's pick a square to attack. If the monster is in that square they then roll the 50% to hit chance. I do this for regular combat and AOO.

Someone described AoO the other day in such a way that it makes sense why you would get them against invisible opponents.

Basically, it's not a free swing per se, but because the opponent is no longer defending himself, it's an attack that gets through his defenses. Thus, if you know there is an invisible creature around and are swinging about you'll get an AoO if the creature is in your threat range, but if you have no idea that there is an invisible creature in the area (ie, you're not trying to attack it), then I don't think you should get an AoO.

So, if the quasit attacks and then flees, invisible for a few rounds (to the point where the party has stopped flailing about for them) then when it returns I'd have them make Spot and Listen checks to notice it returning to get the movement AoO.
