Tips for getting a group of strangers to gel as a group

Have the new group get together at a pub for drinks and talk about gaming, life, etc. Play darts, pool, shuffle board, or what have you. What I'm saying is have them socialize outside the gaming table first and you will find them geling when they do belly up to the gaming table.

Thanks - some good ideas. I met one guy so far at a local bookstore and he seemed like a good guy... and his 10 year old daughter was very good with my 4 year old daughter.

But, nobody in this group really knows anybody (to my knowledge) - and, I know sometimes it takes a little while for personalities to mesh and for the group to gel and to get everybody onto the same page.

Any tips on how to accomplish that?

First spell out any house rules.

After you do that, start the group in an action scene. Start fast and start hard. They are already deep into an evil temple or something like that and just got jumped by something bad. Don’t give them any back story or anything just let the fight play out (full hps and spells). They will jell up fast.

Then once the fight is over do a quick recap of recent events and tell them the boss is on the other side of the next door with some hostage or something and let them take it from there.
